Fallen Enchantress vs Master of Magic, Civilization

My frame of reference for strategy games is usually Civilization since I've spent the most time with it over the last twenty or so years. I was also a huge fan of Master of Magic and Master of Orion, but to be honest, nowadays I mostly focus on RPGs on the Xbox 360 and strategy games on my iPod touch.

A year and a half ago I bought War of Magic based on the hype that it was the spiritual successor to MOM. I played the Betas, commented on these forums that there was no way it was going to be a good much less finished game on release, and like many, was disappointed that was the case.

Fast forward to the last few days and I have to say I love Fallen Enchantress. I've only spent a few hours playing it but I think about it a lot and look forward to my time with it. I'm playing a game on easy difficulty with a faction and character I created myself and I have no complaints about any aspect of the game. It's similar enough to the original Elemental to make picking it up easy but this time around it's polished. Most of all, it's fun and it does a good job with feedback and rewards.

I look forward to more of the game, to future Betas, and to the final release.

May I suggest Kings Bounty to you. Your taste is much like mine and Kings Bounty just rocks. Heroes of Might and Magic meets RPG

Thanks for the tip, looks interesting.

If anyone is really into RPGs you should go check out those old Black Isle/BioWare games.. Im talking about Baldurs Gate 2 (never really played 1) and Icewind Dale 1 & 2 - they are awesome games. Unlike those games they dump down for the XBox (yes I am a pc user and loved Dragon Age although it was already not as complex as I'd wish it to be, and I refuse to play Dragon Age 2).

Plus I also immediately loved the idea of Elemental - I always wanted kind of the baby of Heroes of Might & Magic, Civilization and an RPG

I second the recommendation of King's Bounty.  It's not an empire builder, but for lots of fun tactical combat and rpg leveling its a great time.

I am a Disciples II fanatic. The art is just so well done. The heroes are OP, but in fun MoM way. Glad to see there are people returning from the wastes of the E:WoM launch with positive feelings.

I think this game still has a long way to reach MoM, but it's definitely a step in the right directions.

For similar games, look no further than Age of Wonders (especially the second part).

Eh, King's Bounty is doubtlessly fun, but to me the whole thing feels a bit sloppy, like a bunch of elements plopped into a blender and blended into a smooth paste, rather than a carefully constructed game. The scaling of enemies is really strange: you'll often find a weak army right next to a deadly army. Building a fighting force consists of randomly finding whatever units you can recruit, so your fighting forces are rather motley-feeling and mixed up.

Age of Empires: Shadow Magic is probably one of the best games to try that bears a similarity to Elemental:FE or WoM. Be sure, however, to get the "official" unofficial patch here: http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=661 before playing. It really improves many aspects of the game.

Lords of Magic is also potentially quite interesting, but I couldn't really get into the game very much. And maybe I'll look stupid for saying this, but I bought a cheap "old-ware" copy of Disciples II and was completely confounded by the interface. I couldn't make heads or tails of what things signified or what things did.

This is heresy mister :d There is no scaling problem, and you make plans from the forces you find.

I'm not a big fan of King's Bounty. I absolutely loved the Bioware Infinity Engine games like BG, IWD, Planescape. Great games. It's too bad that Bioware has gone down the tubes (for the most part).

But on the RPG front I'm good. Between Skyrim, the forthcoming Kingdoms of Amular, and plenty of other great games, I'm set.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is another excellent Stratagy RPG game as well.  And it has ships and sea creatures plus it is modable as far as unit creation is concerned.

I loved the Icewind Dale series. I can only hope that this story is true.

Obsidian is also pushing on updating a former Black Isle property: Icewind Dale 3. "I was talking to Atari last week," he confides, "and said why don't we do this?" The old series, he says, didn't end because of low sales. "They stopped being made because of licensing issues, and Interplay going out of business, and BioWare moving on to console, and a whole lot of things. So a part of it is, why not go make Icewind Dale 3? You can't spend $20 million on it, but why not go make it?"
