Welcome to the public beta

Greetings!

It has been a long time. But the day of the public beta for Elemental: Fallen Enchantress has finally arrived.

How you will get it

If you were part of the original beta (pre-ordered the game) the game will automatically be added to your Stardock account this afternoon around 3pm EST.  At that point, you can go to http://download.stardock.com to download and install it.

What is in the beta?

The beta includes an interactive tutorial plus the full sandbox game.

What are we looking for in this beta?

First and foremost, bugs. Specifically, video and sound related ones. And crashes. We always want to hear about crashes.  In addition, we are interested in your suggestions to improve the game particularly in areas of user interface and game balance.

How are along is this beta?

It’s pretty far. The version you will be receiving is version 0.75.  That said, there are a long list of known issues with it that you will likely notice immediately.  For starters, you will likely see graphical glitches like this. It’s known and should be fixed by the first update which will be next Thursday.

What should you do if you have a problem?

If you run into a problem, like a game crash there will be a file in your \programdata\stardock\elemental – fallen enchantress direcotry. It’ll be a ZIP file which will contain a debug.err (always helpful) and a crash dump file.  Send that to us at [email protected] subject: Fallen Enchantress report.

Also, if you have some sort of issue like even getting the game to start or something, in your \documents\my games\stardock\fallenenchantress directory will be the most recent debug.err. That will tell us all kinds of information about your system that we can use to troubleshoot.

How about those who want to get into the beta?

We will be gradually adding more people to the beta in the coming weeks. Eventually, anyone who bought Elemental: War of Magic in 2010 or earlier will get Elemental: Fallen Enchantress for free.  Users who purchased War of Magic in 2011 will get a discount that they can use to purchase Fallen Enchantress and join the beta.  For everyone else, we plan to open the doors completely in a few weeks.

We are very excited to hear what you think.  There is no NDA on this so you are free to give your impressions (good or bad) as you see fit. We hope you like what we’ve done here. Let us know!

Yea, #1 reply.

Congratulations to the whole Stardock team for making this day happen.

As I'm sure you can tell from the posting activity the last couple of days, we're all excited to be part of the Beta.

But i'm going in with the expectation that this game will be shit. I hope you understand... so I can be wowed when i'm wrong.

Also please, I beg of you. Don't announce a release date. Do what Blizzard does: "It's done when it's done." We will understand. We promise.

Frogboy I want you to know that I am going to be your most honest beta tester. I'm not a fanboy, I am a lover of 4x games and Fantasy games and I buy them all. I even have Romance of the Three Kingdoms 11.. I have played 4x games since they existed. I will not bullshit you, I will also not be rude.

I am writing this to tell you to let you know that you should expect honest criticisms and SOLUTIONS and ideas because I really, really, really need this game to be awesome. Listen to me, I am your friend. I do this because I love you.

We have no release date.

I really hope you guys pull this off!  I also hope you open the door sooner than later for people who didn't buy WoM in 2010.  Hell, if the buzz is good, I'd preorder FE for the chance at the beta in a few weeks...

That's a Lot of great news right there :) .

Two questions if I may Frogboy.

1. Have there been any changes in the ways modding is done between WoM and FE?

2. For us modders, if we start modding now with the beta version of FE, will there be a lot we'll have to change to make mods work for the full release? I understand that's based on how big a mod would be, just a ball-park estimate if you can. Mostly I mean will the file structure and coding change much between the beta and the release build?

Thanks in advanced :)

@RavenX

Modding and Campaigns are disabled

The beta is a sandbox beta.  You will have to have an Internet connection to play the beta because we plan to be updating the XML data online so that players don’t have to download an update to the game just to get a balance tweak. It is not copy protection or anything like that. It’s for our convenience.  The end result though is that modding won’t work because it’ll be using our online data.

Good luck Stardock. :)

AFAIK, the beta version of FE will download an updated data blob each time it is started, so apparently mods won't be able to be made just yet.  And I don't think there will necessarily be a workaround like in previous (WoM) betas. =)

EDiT: Beaten by 26 seconds. =)

You can't mod the beta. Read the other posts.

Edit: Wow, ninja'd, on this board. *is shocked*

I will mod it in my imagination then.  :hrmph:

I'm trying to not be too anxious, but I am tentatively optimistic about FE.  It sounds like you guys are on the right track and I hope that FE is hugely successful.

Ahh, didn't know that. Thanks everyone.

Hmm...we'll have to see about this "no workaround" thing. As long as I have a physical file to work with and another computer not hooked up to the internet....there's always a way ;) .

Looking forward to playing and will submit reports as I come across issues.  Hope the beta goes great and gives you plenty of feedback!
