Preview of new Stardock download store / updater

So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

Looking forward to some news on SDC V2. anything that will allow me to dump Gamestop in the deep end is music to my ears.

And what about game/software already purchased? Will there be a way to register them in the new tool?

signed?

Actually I don't mind third party games but I expect all Stardock games to be available through SDC. At this time only part of them are.

I can download Demigod, but then I need Impulse to download the dlc. I see elemental and gal civ 1 but I can't download GalCiv2 (which I could with the old SDC) and Sins of a Solar Empire also ask me to use Impulse.

I think that at least all the games that could be downloaded with the old SDC should be available with the new one and correctly reported in the user account. A lot of game I purchased when the still was totalgaming.net are now tied to Impulse without the power to revert that.

It should be out for everyone this month.  (but no promises . . ever).  :)

I don't know why, but that part really made me laugh.

Oh! I'll Beta test too! *waves hand frantically* Pick me!  O:)

Eventually most/all the games will be on there. They have to be packaged and it's one team doing the games and non games and there's a lot more non games. It's getting there, albeit slowly.

He, he.  Stardock, thy names are Specificity and Clarity.  What's not to love?

Looking forward to a new Stardock Central here too.  Yes, I know I can download full versions of my apps in the store, but I have no idea without checking each one individually which version I currently have compared to the version in the store.  This is making finding and installing updates a giant pain in the rump!!! I really miss a single client that will look at my apps and tell me if a newer version is available.

Having already wiped Gamestop/Impulse from my main gaming computer, I'm looking forward to this too.  Especially the web based version.   |-)

This is great news. Can't believe this had gone under my radar.

Looking forward to uninstalling Impulse ;)

Tracking, scanning, verifying - waiting to *return* in the true professional hands of SDC'entral.

Expecting a galactic uproar of a "Welcome back", boys. :borg:

I'm with you in general, but for the FE beta I'm wishing that SDC v2 was here. The first beta didn't even have the update-nagging functionality that was in the WoM betas. If I didn't follow the boards, I would not have known I needed to download and install the .77 patch. Mind you, I don't mean I want an SDC instead of the nice HTML-based store. Being able to choose between client-based updating and git-yer-own-exe updating means that the potential market for Stardock games is larger.
