Preview of new Stardock download store / updater

So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

Neophil, if there are apps you cannot restore and cannot live without (because WebBlinds or whatever is still *so* useful) let support know and we'll *try* to help you out.

Quoting Roloccolor, reply 170So i wonder how things will be when GS-impulse is no longer supported...will we be able to ( restore the saved archives in SDC with the current impulse files ? )Or how will that be handled? The way i see it is if GS-impulse is no longer supporting or offering stardock products- iam unable to store my programs "forever" in a "legal way"Sounds strange i know and please dont missunderstand me im just trying to know how these things will be handled when it will be out and iam also unpationatly awaiting the new SDC.I just hope i wont have to make a HDD backup to restore my applications... since impulse is already having a hard time restoring with an updated file.

Roloccolor, all you will have to do is go to the store and download and save your apps to any internal/external drive. You can do that right now.

Neophil, just when the hell are you going to get with it, and just go to the store and download the latest versions you are entitled to?

The purely painful, endlessly repetitive airing of your obsession with Impulse is getting a bit much for many people here.

no Doc... that wasnt possible i thought about the same but as soon as my ObjectDesktop was expired i was unable unable to get them via stardock store...
My thought was maybee i would be able to use my impulse backups to restore my apllications but i didnt find any option for that in SD store to use the impulse backup files.
So i expanded my OD subscription since i would like to make some more skins without beeing able to restore my Skinstudio in impulse i had to and also i wanted iconpackager back cant live with default icons anymore.
I admit i dont use all of the great apps Objectdesktop comes with i only use deskscapes and even that rarely only Iconpackager windowblinds and skinstudio are important for me - dont need fences or anything else since i tend to keep my desktop clean i dont have to mention that all app´s are great but i simply dont have use for them all.
Anyway i expanded only thing left to do is to write stardock support  to merge my windowblinds subscription with OD.
I already thought about opening a topic just to remember the fellow folks here on WC to backup their apps in stardock store and not via Impulse.
But i will keep off from that maybee it was just me that was false informed about the situation that caused these problems but i would like to see a info thread about this since its confusing ( for me it was ).

Okay, but when I log in, I don't see "Stardock Central."  Where do I log in to see this?  It seems like the precise answer is missed.

The biggest differentce between the apps listed on the store and teh Stardock Central application will be that the app will detect what is installed and what version and prompt for updates.

Sweet. That will rock, sir!   5*

Give it an IRC client so I can finally retire this olde SDC ....it's getting long in the tooth....;)

You still have SDC? Oh my...

If it's getting an IRC client, I want a mail server functionality in it, too. And it should be able to talk to my printer - not necessarily to print, just to check in, see what's up.

I can see it already. Adobe Stardock central. The download service is the bait. Then there's 200MB of other "functions".

No, smartiepants....the Original Stardock Central had an IRC client.  It was [still is] entirely practical to combine support/communication with product access.

Fatuous comments about 'mail server/talking to a printer' serve nothing other than to define a troll.

And so in the end, Heavenfall disappeared from the Elemental Forums.  Those of us who remain remember his gritty comments with fondness, but with the harsh realization that once you're marked as a Troll by the Jafinator your days are numbered.

No...but with the hysteria that surrounded the advent of Impulse....and quaintly the equal amount of hysteria surrounding its sale and subsequent ending as a software updater/downloader it's clearly counter-productive to have 'clever' comments relating to its replacement....when it's not even public yet.

It's like an 'ill wind' it blows no-one any good.

As long as it's tied to your account, it should already be there.

Most excellent. Looking forward to moving onto this alternative; will definitely be getting Rebellion through Stardock now.

Impulse had an IRC client.

At least we know now given Brad's Elemental announcement that the new client should be ready by Jan.19th no matter what, given that's how FE will be distributed.
