Returning to WoM

I'll have to say this game keeps dragging me back. I picked it up on day one but didnt play around much because of the bugs. I installed it again yesterday after getting annoyed with the HOMM 6 release. Pretty solid game but there are some massive bugs with the game (disappearing dynasty weapons, chipmunks...etc) that will frustrate me so gonna wait for them to get fixed.

Anyways I am impressed with the sheer number of changes since I last played. I was up all night playing a campaign. BTW if i had a suggestion. Please use some higher tempo music peices for combat and such. I was falling asleep while playing not because I was bored but the music is too relaxing for a game.

I'm  excited for Fallen Enchantress (btw when is beta / release.) I'd be willing to participate in some focused testing if you have need.

There will be an open beta before release, though the plan I think is to have the game in a higher state of polish in the beta then typical SD releases, to avoid bad PR, which is a very prudent thing to do.

Hehe don't blame them. Elemental WOM was in a pretty sorry state at release. But this series has potential so I'll stick with it. My experience with Stardock is that they are one of the best for post release fixes. I enjoy reading their Dev Blogs. Its fun to see the various bugs that creeps up.

How would that be a tough choice?  Show me a beautiful woman, and I will show you a man tired of her shit. ;)

How do you guys suggest a new player gets the most of this game?

I didn't buy it at release because of the horrible reviews so i decided to pick it up and give it a shot with all the patches.

So far it doesn't seem very intuitive.  I am playing the first campaign and it seems ridiculously easy and linear.  Maybe I am on the newbie campaign?

I find it extremely annoying that when a building is completed in a city I don't get notified to get something else rolling like in the Civ series.

Is there maybe a thread geared towards new players and how to get the most out of this game?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as of right now I'm already losing interest fast.

Thanks

I would strongly suggest skipping the campaign and downloading the After the War mod, and the sub-mods Expanded Factions and Artifacts.  Just make sure you turn mods on in the game options. =)  I think the combination of WoM 1.4 and After the War and its sub-mods make the game quite fun. :D

Hey Steven,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I downloaded and installed them by copying the folders into the root folder of my elemental war of magic directory.  However it doesn't look like they are being loaded by the game.  It shows no mods installed and the features of the mods don't seem to be showing up.  Any suggestions on how i can correctly install these and confirm they are actually running?

thanks!

Here's a post I made in another thread.  Also make sure "Use Mods" in the option menu is on.

For After the War, the files go into the install directory, over-writing any files that are there.  You might have extracted files there but not overwritten files.  If you have to pay Materials to build farms the After the War mod is not installed correctly.  The After the War mod changes the cost to build a Farm/Imperial Farm from Materials to Gildar, for starters. :)

For Expanded Factions and Artifacts sub-mods, extract each entire archive to:

Windows 7 and Vista-  "C:\Users\*YourUsernameHere*\My Documents\My Games\Elemental\Mods\"  (replace *YourUsernameHere* with your username)

Windows XP-  "C:\Documents and Settings\*YourUsernameHere*\My Documents\My Games\Elemental\Mods\"  (replace *YourUsernameHere* with your username)

They have to be installed in the operating system partition (as above) for them to be recognized by the game.  If they are they in the install directory they won't be read.

Try these suggestions out, and tell me how they went! :)   If you have the mods installed correctly (as above) and are still finding it hard, I can give you some gameplay tips.  But I don't think the mods are installed correctly on your computer currently.  If they are correctly installed, for starters, Farms will cost Gildar (After the War mod), there should be extra factions and Sovereigns to choose from when you start a game (Expanded Factions sub-mod) and there should be artifacts and mounts notable pickup locations (Artifacts sub-mod), and Dungeons, ie. single or multi-level tactical battle sequences, with rewards and difficulty based on tier (Artifacts sub-mod).

Thanks again Steven,

I copied over the existing folders there for artifacts and expanded factions.  Looks like this

Hopefully it fires up this time! :)

Btw do you know the link to a decent guide to the game explaining the core features.  I've found the manual pretty lacking.
