Update: EWOM 1.4 + After the War Mod (including expanded factions + artifacts) = FUN

Hi all,

I had stopped playing around version 1.19 or so, due to enemy sovereigns going kamikaze on my towns. This led to many funny victories that were a bit unsatisfying overall.

However, I recently upgraded to 1.4 and also installed the "After the War" mod with expanded factions and artifacts.  No crashes and plenty of variety in sovereigns, monsters and artifacts.  The dungeons, in particular, are an awesome addition...

To those that only read negative info regarding this game and haven't tried its latest incarnation, they should give it a shot.  No, it's not Civ IV, but for those looking for a fantasy 4X game, it definitely scratches an itch.  It's definitely fun and I'll be playing it for some time...

Major kudos and thanks to FrogBoy and Heavenfall for making this game what it is now.  I, for one, greatly appreciate it!

Glad you enjoy the mods! Self-promotion time - GO!

After the War is meant to fix some of the more annoying design issues and bugs with the game, but really it's a matter of adding 0.1% polish to an almost finished product. My personal recommendation is that everyone use this.

ExpandedFactions is there to put some fantasy races in a fantasy game, a lot of people have helped out with it to give Elven and Angel cities completely new graphical looks, and there has also been some work to change the repeatable buildings for the other factions (like huts, workshops and so on). I would recommend that everyone who feels that the normal factions are a bit too similar, use this mod.

The Artifact mod fixes the issue of having very few magical items in the game. It adds weapons, armors and even magical mounts. And then there's the dungeons, as well - layer upon layer of increasingly difficult waves of enemies, holding onto precious artifacts, resources and sometimes even champions. This mod is mostly for those that enjoy the adventuring content in the game, it can help give you some fun and meaningful things to do while waiting for that next technology to finish.

I am about 2000 turns into a really good After the War game. The AI is actually working. Resoln is so powerful I may actually lose this one. They are sending wave after wave of soldiers against me and I am forced to use my level 10 heroes to hold out while I teleport shock troops behind their lines. I am saving up for a few volcanoes so I can close up the eastern pass and wipe out their cities in the north. All other factions are small and insignificant. This is the best game I have played of Elemental. I quite curious to see if the AI will counter my Raise Mountain spells.

Hear hear! Thank you Frogboy and thank you Heavenfall!  I haven't had a lot of time to play 1.4, but when I do play it, I'm really enjoying it now.

I would love to hear from Brad if he has tried the 1.4 version with Heavenfall's mod yet.  Maybe he will be inspired to include it in the archival update he is soon to release.

There is a really big bug that I am almost hesitant to reveal, because it makes it possible to beat hugely more powerful AI enemies.  If you get attacked on a particular turn (either by monsters or other AI players) you can load the autosave for that turn and everything will happen normally, except you will *not* get attacked at all on that turn, and often a 1-2 turn period after.  But if you are getting attacked each turn, all you need to do to win is get a good start (and sometimes even that is not necessary), and load the autosave for any turn that you get attacked by an enemy you can't beat.  As I said, I'm very hesistant to report this  =) because it means even on Challenging (500%) difficulty (one of Heavenfall's difficulty settings I think) you can beat any sized enemy by loading the autosave each turn you get attacked.  In all the times I've tried it loading an autosave always prevents the AI attacking you in any way.  This has happened in all WoM versions I've played, with or without mods.

Best regards,
Steven.

It's not possible to plan against that kind of "gaming" of the system. if I introduce a modded weapon that deals 9000 damage and makes me invulnerable, Frogboy can't do anything about that. That's pretty much the same.

Cheaters gonna cheat.

why you hesitating to report

and most of all why would anyone use a bug like that?

this is not a competitive game (unfortunately), just a single player challange that remains closed in your room

no one will ever know what you did

so why on earth would anyone cheat to win alone in his own room against a ai?

i dont get it...

I would quite happily play an Ironman (no reloading) mode in a game like Elemental or fheroes2 if it was available (and I have enquired about the Ironman mode in regards to Temple of Elemental Evil with hopes of implementing it in fheroes2 - check the Company of Eight boards) and the game was stable enough to prevent losing a whole game to bugs.  I enjoy Nethack (specifically Vulture-Nethack I play now) and that has permadeath and no reloading.

Best regards,
Steven.

Is this particular bug going to be fixed so the game can work as designed, or are people just going to sit and cast aspersions on my character based on extremely limited evidence?

Best regards,
Steven.

To me, this is less of a "bug" than something you can choose not to do so as to not make the game non-fun...

Still, when compared to many things one could do in this world, it is pretty minor, no?  And remember to read my final version of my last post.  What I do when playing a super hard difficulty of a single player game that is not an Ironman mode like in Nethack, doesn't involve hacking the code or modding myself a huge advantage, and is not used for the purpose of making a public high score - is my business, even if I do choose to reveal some of it for the purposes of letting people know of a bug that needs to be fixed.  I don't appreciate people making aspersions on my character based on the (very) limited evidence of my post before last.

Best regards,
Steven.

You're right, you shouldn't be "attacked" for telling the devs about an exploit. How you use it is up to you.

Even though it's not appreciated and based on limited evidence, I would like to make an aspersion on StevenAus's character.  I think StevenAus is one of the finest, upstanding, and eloquent contributors in this forum.

Thank you, I really appreciate your comment Trojasmic!  Although, there is a little bit more evidence with regards to your post, based on the archived posts of mine on this forum. =)
