Version 1.4 discussion thread

Version 1.4 discussion thread

Work in progress

For the first time since The Corporate Machine, I have a version of one of our games 100% in my hands.

So v1.4 is all mine. Everyone else is now fully on Fallen Enchantress.

I'm not on FE yet because some of the mechanics are still being implemented so I can't work on its AI yet.

It's just you guys and me.  So it's like being a modder again except I get to play with the source code.

In this thread, I'll be hanging out talking about the "stuff" I'm doing.

I downloaded the 1.4 patch last night and played for about an hour. I have not played for about 3 months.

First thing I noticed was the stacking since was reduced to 6 which later discovered on the patching notes that this is what it's suppose to be so no problem.

Then noticed that the creatues had a LOT of HP while my units had around normal amount of hp for their level (10hp.) First I thought was to retreat because I thought I had no chance given the number of HP they had compared to my troops but I ended up slaugthering them.  I did eventually loosing because a stack of 4 spiders each with 230 hp a piece attack my city with all my troops in it and defeated them. Other than my Soveriegn who had 27 hp the reset of my army (12 units) had around 6 to 10 hp each.

They will have less health when you turn the difficulty down. Sounds like it is up pretty high.

Ah the default seems to be on the highest difficulty level. Well it has been a long time since I played last :)

IF there's a v1.5 in the future, that's something I would work on along with the hero upgrading and some balance (getting rid of some unlimited buildings).

Balance sounds great!

Brad, please check out https://forums.elementalgame.com/412359 - some simple changes combined with your AI improvements could definitely make for a more balanced game!

I have not played at Elemental during the past 10 months, and I have not posted on the forum during that hiatus, even though I have regularly checked in (without logging in) to read about the evolution of the game.

I have been a faithful Stardock customer and Brad Wardell fan since 1999. My hiatus was not a negative reaction to the state of the Elemental game a few months after its original release. I stopped playing because, having a lot of faith in "Frogboy", I intuitively knew that I just had to patiently wait for him to jump in and fix the game.

Today, after having read everything Frogboy has posted on this thread, I updated the game to version 1.4 and I am very glad to have the occasion to rediscover the game in its new state, 10 months later. Again, my faith in Brad Wardell's genius and zeal is rewarded.

My daughter just spent 3 whole months playtesting the Heroes VI beta and posting on the Ubisoft forum. Not taking in consideration a few general statements made by one Ubisoft representative, once every 2 weeks, she never saw one of the game's actual developers reply on that forum. People posted tons of bug reports and feedback : they never received one single word of response or comment from any of the French and Hungarian developers. The Heroes VI beta forum really was a black hole.

By contrast, Stardock CEO and game developer Frogboy's direct involvement in the coding of version 1.4 and in detailed reports on this thread (among others) is stellar, in a galactic sense. I do not contribute anything to this forum (lack of time), but I remain, in the shadows, a very solidly faithful customer and fan of Brad Wardell.

No chance. WoM is done I think.

https://forums.stardock.com/412194/page/1/#3000750

Frankly, I'm tired of the complaining regarding WOM and am done with it.

It is not worth my time to keep working on it when every update is met with "Yea, that's nice but why didn't you do A, B, and C?"

WOM is what it is. I like it. I'm satisfied with where it's at.  It's done.

I repect this statement. I don't expect from stardock to fulfill my wishes for Ewom. I am satisfied with the game. Even if the game is done, I need to make this suggetion if not for Ewom but for FE.

I have very little free time. I play lots of games when I can. This is the only forum that I ever post suggestions. If the flaws that I point out are invalid in stardocks'eyes then please discard them. if not, please try to fix it in anyway you please in a future version.

If you think this is stellar I wonder what you would think about Path of Exile developers involvement with their beta testers where you get daily 10+ posts from different people that work there on the feedback provided by players.

On topic, I am sorry Brad but I am going to wait for FE. No amount of small balance changes will turn WoM from an ugly duck to a beautiful swan.

I just updated to 1.4 and started my first game in about 6 months.  While very happy overall, and I feel this is the state in which Elemental should have been released, one thing that struck me is the lack of NPC's.  Even the annoying guy from the first turn is gone.  I don't know if it's a bug. bad luck, or they've been cut back to keep it consistent with the lore.

There must be some out there, because I keep getting messages about A.I. players having children, but in about 25 turns I haven't run into a single one.

How much of the adventure tree have you researched. That is how they spawn.

Hardly any.  They used to be all over the place.  When did this change? I'm not talking about quests but hireable/marriage material characters.

A long time ago. If you read the descriptions in the adventure tree it will tell you that each hero lore you research will spawn new heroes and higher level monsters. The total 5 levels are split by the total number of players in the game. So you may research 5 levels, only to get to monster level 2 and hero level 2. All players must advance this aspect of the game. It really needs to be like this so that no one player can force the others to deal with high level monsters. Also, make sure you level your wife and Sov really high before proposing. The stats for your children will be higher.

any idea why cities names change on there own ? me and my daughter both have v 1.4(impulse digital) and we both have the same problem.it happens mid to late in a game.while the tag above the city shows one name if you look at the cities stats it shows the correct name.

That is a bug that might be hard to squash. Have you tried clicking on the city info screen and going to rename city? My guess is that you may be reloading the game after having quit. Does this happen when you play straight through without stopping? There are always problems with the data getting messed up when you load an old game.

On a side note, you seem to have raised a daughter that likes videogames. Families like you are the reason I serve to make this nation safer. I salute you.   k1

Thought I'd do another play through and make some notes as I was going along. I respect the fact that no more work is being done, so I guess this is more intended for fallen enchantress and any more general interest.

Teleport seems obscenely expensive for it's level and the point in the game it appears. I know that it was open to abuse (especially by the player) at it's previous cost, but surely it would have been better to have limited it to the caster ONLY, rather than their whole army. Or, if it's going to be so expensive, shouldn't it at least be a higher level spell?

Playing the game from the cloth map, I keep running across goodie huts that weren't visible before I stepped on them. Thank god they're usually positive!

When I alt tabbed out to write this post, I got a DV error: invalid call on the way back in. Never had this on previous versions.

You know, i've always thought those little pubic stubble forests looked kinda lame. Looking at the screens I've seen of FE, it looks much more fantastical and interesting. I've really tried to get to love the wasteland idea of WOM, but I really can't. It's all just endless, depressing brown (I hated fallout for the same reason).

I find some of the recruitment dialogue slightly confusing as regarding which response corresponds to accepting the offer. For example “Your greed amuses me” could be seen as the positive response couldn't it?

You know, even after a year of playing this game, I still don't fully understand which technologies spawn monster lairs, which technologies allow me to build on them, which technologies spawn notable locations, which technologies raise my notable location level and which technologies spawn new resources. Can the descriptions of these finally be made clear? I always want to go down the route of recruiting monsters instead of units, but when I inevitably get some lairs they are usually far away from the front lines. My view is for monsters to be worth it, I either need to be able to recruit them easily where I need them (as easily as training) or they need to be sufficiently better than trained units to justify lugging them around the map.

Fire Shrine looks like THIS

When I fought the battle against the alpha wolf for the maggie's key quest, I got an odd bug where it was my sov's turn, but it wouldn't let him attack or move or cast a spell (even though the squares around him were highlighted blue), so I had to quit. As an aside I never understood why the quest spawned a wolf at the lost key location, who you had to fight, and then when you entered the location, you had to fight another battle against wolves. Shouldn't there just be one battle?

I keep thinking about founding settlements to grab all the odd little wolf dens and refugee camps around, but it doesn't seem worth it for the food costs of developing them properly. I try not to go beyond 2 or 3 settlements per food resource. But that just leaves loads and loads of dead space between my settlements, and whole sub continents of land that might as well not be there, that the influences of my towns will never be large enough to cover. I'm never really sure whether this game is supposed to be encouraging me to build settlements all over the place, or only where there is good stuff. Visually, it just looks weird with all these patchwork areas of fallen territory separated by random areas of wasteland brown or winter snows.

So anyway, after a while the nearest AI declares war. He has a strength of 400 and I have one of 50. Nothing happens. He has an army of lurks and trolls (how?) hanging around, but they don't do anything. After a while I train 2x guardian groups and 2x peons (next tier). I take my sovereign and beat the lurk army. Then I take the nearest settlement of his, with the aid of an ice elemental. He has two or three depleted units of lord hammer guys, and I kill most of them with blizzard (I have three water shards) and finish them off with archers. So far, pretty familiar.

I still enjoy making my units, even if they are the same every time. I'd prefer to have some sort of meaningful strategic choice when doing so. Ie, one game I might think “this time I will raise an army of disciplined but tactically inflexible pikemen” or “this time I will train an army of hard hitting berzerkers,” but it's never like that, just “best current weapon.” I remember brad saying unit design was included because people enjoyed the GalCiv2 ship builder so much, and there's a lot of sense in that idea. But it currently neither has meaningful strategic equipment choices for playing styles or ingenuity, nor the aesthetic options for personalisation. It surely would not be massively difficult to get some different aesthetic cloaks to choose between (with personal symbols) or banners or armour style variations, or personalised colouring, would it?

At this point I gave up with the game, and I think I'll leave it now until FE. I'm in a situation now where I just can't afford the food to take any more settlements from the faction to the west. I still haven't made contact with anyone in the other directions. I've done some exploring further east but not run into anything worth a settlement, and I don't have the food really to afford one. I can't really afford to take my sov from the front line to do any adventuring or exploring. Normally I'd use teleport, but as mentioned, it's completely prohibitive. I have a bunch of goodie huts constricting the growth of my cities that it will take me the best part of 50 turns to reach on foot.

I'm running on Windows 7 64, GeForce 9600 GT.

Do you use the After the War mod? I know I have been plugging it on every thread, but it really is a great fix to so much of what you mentioned.

It looks really good, but you're right, i don't. If i play again before FE i will definately try it.
