That is actually the true origin of the Vasari. Genetically modified insects were created to eat the garbage. However, the fail safes failed, of course, leading the modified insects to become the dominant species on Earth. Overtime, evolution of this new species resulted in what is now known as the Vasari....

That's an actual to-scale rendering of the asteroid that hit near South America that they believe helped pushed the dinosaurs over to full extinction 65 million years ago.
