Question for the mods - Fallen Enchantress - what is it, anyway?

Unfortunately I don't know jack about the new expansion - care to enlighten me?

Hey,

I've been out of the loop as to the actual game development for the future (I've had my head stuck in playing mods).  I've heard of this 'Fallen Enchantress' thing and I thought originally, 'Eh, just a mod'.  Except, from what I'm reading and hearing on-site, it is going to be an expansion pack.

Firstly, I'd like to know, as much as can be told now anyways, what exactly is this expansion pack going to add new?  Is there a list of prospective improvements somewhere?  I must say I like the idea of the new, Galciv II style tech tree, it should be more intuitive and no flying blind, so to speak.

Secondly, I hear the term 'Fallen' rattled around like a third faction.  I assume they're something like the forces of the Valsharess from that old D&D game Neverwinter Nights, more specifically Hordes of the Underdark - that is to say, an army backed up heavily by monsters as well as regular troops.  So I guess the Kingdoms and Empires are losing at least some of their monster troops and the Fallen are getting them, is that the general idea?

Thirdly, how different to now will the setting up of races for a Fallen custom faction (if that is going to be allowed) for your standard (non-campaign) game, as compared to the other two types of factions from War of Magic in either that or Fallen Enchantress?  I know from experience one can use Kingdom races for Empire sides (my own usual custom factions from the in-game generator now are usually Empire faction/Tarth or other usually Kingdom race - I figure said Tarthan are exiles or traitors rallied under whatever custom Sovereign their side has, but I digress) but not the other way around in the case of the Urxen, Quendar or Trogs.  Is this pattern much the same for Fallen Enchantress?  How will the new faction type affect this?

Thank you for your time.

Fallen Enchantress is an expansion pack which is being put out by Stardock. It's actually better to just think of it as a new game. Because it essentially is.

There are two races in Elemental....Human and Fallen. All the kingdoms are human, all the empires minus kraxis(they're human) are fallen.

If you look at the Dev Journals sub-forum here on this site, there's occasional posts about FE there. Most of what we know is there. :)

In a nutshell it's a stand-alone expansion. You won't have to have War of Magic installed to play it, or once its for sale even own WoM to buy FE. Those who bought WoM early enough (IIRC in 2010) get FE for free.

We don't have a complete set of changes yet, as it's still in development. What's been announced looks like a major improvement though.

I suppose they believe it will be a bug free, fun game. I don't know how they'll get to that point working from what we are still running here but it will be interesting.

Well they've got the vast majority of the dev team to work on it, and an extended period of time. So quite a lot can get done that we won't see for a while.

I think he realizes that FE is an expansion pack guys. The question is, is that if FE is considered a "whole new game", will the gameplay drastically change.

No. They're not turning it into an RTS. :P

Correct. Combat will be resolved in a spawned first person shooter window.

Man, that sounds awesome.

If Brad hadn't been running with the same joke, I'd say take care.  This being the internet, someone's bound to take you seriously.

How do you expect this to compete with Dwarf Fortress? Just relying on the graphical superiority?
