A speech to encourage those that have lost hope in War of Magic.

I was thinking about how many have spoken about losing faith in Stardock and specifically, Elemental War of Magic.  I tried to think of encouraging words, but I decided that instead of using my own words, I would adapt a famous speech from the past.  So, I have adapted the majestic Clark W. Griswold speech from Vacation when his family lost hope in Wally World.

"I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten weeks from the fucking fun patch 1.3, and you wanna bail out! Well, I'll tell you something, this is no longer a game . . . it's a quest! It's a quest for fun! I'm gonna have fun, and you're gonna have fun! We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgery to remove our Goddamn smiles! You'll be whistling Zip-a-dee-doo-da out of your assholes! I've got to be crazy! I'm on a pilgrimage to see a Frog! Praise Frogboy!"

Classic, lol.

Your post is appreciated Xia, and you deserve credit for keeping a stiff upper lip, but the latest iteration (ver 1.19k), from the most recent playtesters indicates that this beta is completely unplayable. Not good. Frogboy needs to get serious about this or there won't be anyone left who cares anymore.

Elemental's already fun for me, I just need that 1.2 patch and I'll basically be set. Anything else is icing and cherries on the cake.

You are quite frankly illogical and unreasonable. The very latest patch in the beta had a bug. It will probably be fixed by tonight. Most people testing the beta have seen significant stability gains. I know I basically don't crash ever anymore. They are taking it quite seriously as is obvious to anyone actually paying attention and not randomly mouthing off like a ADHD child.

Aside: where did dowdyhoody's original draft go? I read something like what Dsaraider quoted. I can read a minor correction to his/her reply 8 with the View Edits function. But reply 3 has no View Edits button despite showing different text. Is this a forum code bug someone should report to GungslingerBara?

I have not lost faith in Stardock - they are still quite frank and honest, or at least they try to be, and they gave me Sins and Galciv2 to enjoy. However, I have lost faith in Elemental completely, since it is destined to remain rather bland and boring game with many strange design decisions. The hopes now lie in Fallen Enchantress, since that's the project that will attempt to create what Elemental should have been in the first place. Elemental is now a buried project in my opinion - and all the flowers, candles, soothing music and neatly dressed people won't change the fact that the persion we are talking about is dead.

ever faithful here....great movie reference btw Xia..best line of the whole flick I think

1.19l was released less than 24 hours later to deal with the bug in question. It's available right now.

Anyway, regarding the topic at hand...

Thanks for your kind words.

I think the post should be called faith in War of Magic, not Elemental since eventually there will be quite a few Elemental: <Game>

Do *I* have faith in War of Magic's future? It really depends on v1.3 as that will really be the do-or die version for the game in my mind. If people hate that, it'll be time to just focus on Fallen Enchantress.  If people like the direction it takes, then it's on to v1.4 which will diverge further from FE/WOM 1.0.

Lord Xia's speech was good, but I liked Frogboy's better because it had less swearing...

I've put WOM aside until 1.3 comes out.  Got other things to play right now.

As long as either 1.3 or FE ends up being the game I expected when I paid for Elemental, I'll be satisfied.

Do you understand that to spawn off a bunch of franchises from a product, you need to have an epic experience with the first one?  If you can't even get this one off the ground, then the others will just be throwing money down a hole.

I like this post. I was going to make some humourous (to me) remark about it, most likely involving Mel Gibson and nipple twisting, but it turns out that I agree, and think that the the quote couldn't be more appropriate. So there you go, I agree with you and Mr. Griswold completely.

Not certain about this.  For example, Assasin's Creed I is generally regarded as a disaster, but the series is certainly doing well for itself now.  Similarly, the first Two Worlds was, at release, pretty much universally panned.  Now obviously these are exceptions and not the rule, but sometimes successful series come from mediocre (or worse) beginnings.

I agree, I had a simular experience with Paradox's Hearts of Iron 3... There was such a mess of the original and Paradox decided to put out the expansion Semper Fi... I got it in hopes it would fix the original... I was not impressed.
I like some of paradox's games, some of them are even my favorites... but HOI3/Semper just pissed me off. Enough to be so wary of their operation, that I do not trust them to issue out a functioning game... at all... and Vicky 3 was  another example of shoddiness post-HOI3!

I'm taking a chance on this one having bought it at the half-price as it seemed to be a game I would be interested in.
I just hope you guys at Stardock aren't taking a page off Paradox, because it stopped me from purchasing any further games from them... at least until I hear if its a really well put-together game somewhere on the interwebs... with massive amounts of positive feedback.

Yes, there are a lot of games put out by Stardock that are really great, I have a lot of fun with them,... but remember it was the same with Paradox... do you really want your customer base to dilapidate into "yes-men" as the money walks away from a shoddy reputation?

So I'm going to try this game out and see how it goes, I know there is a lot of work to be done yet, so I guess I'll see where it goes from here... just dont expect me to buy an expansion if the original is still broke... ok?

I think I might be one of the very few that have had a lot of fun playing this game.  The design is unique enough that it has held my interest.  The problem I've had with it is the game crashing bugs, not the gameplay.  I've had fun playing comp stomps with my friends, but we always have to find ways of keeping it from crashing.

To me, once most the bugs are worked out then War of Magic will be a game I'll keep coming back to, as long as the other Elemental games don't replace its game play/style directly.

edit:  After some more thought, I had to say that I hope 1.2 does well because I really do like the way War of Magic games play out and am honestly worried that Fallen Enchantress will deviate too far from what I like in War of Magic.

The ultimate example of a Franchise where the first game was a disaster but later ones made tons of money- Street Fighter.

I too seem to be one of the few who have found Elemental WOM fun from the beginning.  Then again I also find Dragon Age 2 fun, and lots of people apparrently hate it, so maybe I am strange.  Oh well each to their own :-).  Personally I'm hoping that Stardock will eventually start working on Galactic Civ 3 :), but that has nothing to do with this topic so I'll stop rambling now :).

each to their own Raven, one persons hate is anothers love ;)

as was stated before that SD made mistakes on EWOM and they've learned from it. Later games on the series will also take and learn from the mistakes that were made. No ones perfect... lol I better not go into that rant again like I did in the other thread defending SD lmao. Really though first game I played that was a SD product was Galciv2 and I liked that game, then out came SOSE, again I liked that game a lot and now we have EWOM which despite all it's flaws I like a lot (it reminds me too much of Civ4 FFH2 mod)

If I had the necessary credentials and schooling I'd probably be seeking a job at SD as it seems like one of those gaming companies that you really want to work for because they are all about gaming and giving customers enjoyable games to play.

I will promise to play Elemental: WoM v1.3 through and try my best to enjoy and look at it from a completely fresh perspective. I'm dying to find out how it plays and how I ultimately feel about this game. Whatever the case, this has been a really, really interesting ride.

I can easily say that WoM is really on the cusp of some really cool game play. In my mind, adding a happiness/rebellion mechanic and improvements outside of cities would go a very long way to making the game a lot more interesting.

So what if folks are just like "okay, 1.3's nice enough I guess, but man, I can't wait to get some Fallen Enchantress here!"

That is to say, ambivalent or somewhat pleased about 1.3, but still far more excited about FE. Because that's what I anticipate happening. And there will doubtless be someone still saying it sucks, of course, but that has no real bearing on things at this point.
