New Player needs help please

I bought Elemental @ launch but I don't know how to play it as I've never played any game like this.I have no idea @ all what to do so where would I start to learn the most basic gameplay tactics.I know there are beginners guide's on this site but since I've never played any 4X or turn based games or Civilation type games I don't even know where to begin in a game.I've played figuring the more I practice I will understand how it works but I'm left shaking my head confused but wanting to learn it.I bought the game knowing there were problems @ launch but there's something about Elemental that makes me want to play.Any help is appreciated.

The best place to start if you have never played any games like Elemental is to play the campaign. It will basically walk you through all the game elements, though you will still have to work a bit to figure out some of them. Once you finish the campaign, the sandbox game which is the real meat of the game should be a little easier to manage as you will already know about creating cities and units, as well as researching spells and technology.

Yes,  campaign is best used as a turtoral.  When it comes to sandbox play (my fav), there are several necessary things to do.

Build your settlement next to FOOD, (fertile land).   Hire some NPCs, equip your sov w best armor u have.  Build tech research buildings and research first few mil techs (better armor) (oak spears) ,  Equip sov/NPCs with them.  Traveling boots add one movement, if you can afford it, buy them for entire wandering party.  If you have magic research either magic arrow, or the second level summon familiar (or both).  Summon familiar and keep it close.  Form your party and level up, while claiming the goodie huts, and doing the initial (easy) quests that pop up.

However, there are several GREAT posts on this site.  Please take time to search fro them, and read...  theres is more detailed advice then the general advice i just wrote.  Have fun, explore, and enjoy.

Best way - is just to do stuff.  Whatever seems fun.  If you lose, and that matters to you, turn the difficulty down a notch a try again.  One of the joys of a game like this is in the exploration.  Try not to get too hung up on winning.

Basic priorities

1) figure out what stuff does (do this by trying all your options - build stuff, try different options, research stuff)

2) explore the map (build a unit and wonder it around!)

3) build units and try a few fights

4) build a new city

5) do more of the above

6) work out what "works" - whether that is you having the most fun, or defeating your enemies.

7) start a new game and try out your plan
