1.19e and Still no fix for the Failed to download data file Are you serious?

So here we are TWO patches on from the one which BROKE my game and causes it to continually give me the "failed to Download Data" file error and then CTD's when trying to launch the game and still we have NO FIX for this? only a temporary workaround.

Seriously?  Is noone at Stardock even looking into this issue?  I know im not the only one who has the problem as I've seen the posts, not to mention another poster provided me the temporary workaround.

As much as I loved Gal Civ 1 and 2 I can't help but feel there is a whol different level of acceptable "standard" being allowed for an actual retail game when it comes to Elemental.

As a consumer promise of a free expansion or not I feel I have been MORE THAN considerate and patient with this game and its developers and still MANY months on all I have to show for it is an electronic paperweight that doesnt even launch anymore.

Not happy, not happy at all.  these guys have now gone from a company I was happy to buy from sight unseen to one I would definitely read the reviews before purchasing from in future.

I have Stardock installed on my C:\ and I have Elemental itself in the impulse directory on my D:\ I have searched both with read only unchecked in order to see all hidden files and folders and what Carielf is asking for is just not there in either location.  There are no other locations on my drives that I know of that have ANY directories related to stardock or impulse besides the other SD games I own and there is no reason the logs from elemental would be turning up in those games directories.

The location she wants you to look at is not related to where Elemental nor Impulse are installed.

Try this:

[start button] -> [Run] -> (then type) C:\ProgramData

(you can replace the C: with whatever drive windows is installed to on your PC, most people have it set to C).

Anyway, there should be a "Stardock" folder in that directory, and an "Elemental - War of Magic" subfolder within.

This is where CariElf is asking you to look for logs at.  And from the looks of your responses, not where you have been looking.

Hope that helps.

~C

Thanks C

this was very helpful and took me to exactly where the logs were found

Much appreciated :)

NeoWolfen, try closing Impulse and running the following file: http://sd.stardock.com/curthendzell/fix_registrations.reg Make sure to follow the link in Internet Explorer, as other web browsers will not handle the file type correctly. Once you follow the link, save the file and double-click it to apply it. Then launch Impulse and login with your account (same account as the forums) and run Elemental.

BTW, that hidden directory is something Windows should make users more aware of.  Starting in Windows Vista, developers are supposed to stuff things in there to be "certified" but as a "power user" I hate having stuff hidden away from the user.

Thanks Dewie that worked and the game now lanches properly.

One query however, now on launching it is stating there is a major update available, which if I click to update does nothing except takes me to the impulse window, which shows no updates available.  Is this intended? or is this something else I need to worry about? lol

Thanks to all the support folks who have been on this and for the resolution, much appreciated :)

Don't get me started on the woes of Microsoft and thier alien way of thinking this thread will end up many pages longer lol  why they have a directory that doesnt show up on a cursory search nor does it let you find any of its contents even if you specifically search for them by name but WILL let you find the hidden directory itself if you search for that by name is beyond me as its counter intuitive.

Thinking it has something to do with pre-release updates, or the patch that was today.

Check those settings and see if it leads to anything.

I wonder if it's possible for Impulse to have a function to solve problems like this more easily in the future.

Wondered if it may be a placeholder for the imminent patch maybe?  Either way as i say now the game when it launches says there is a major update available 1.11?? but Impulse isn't showing any.  the games current install is 1.19f beta which would seem to be further on hence my confusion.

Joasoze, are you having the problem with the 'file failed to download' problem also, or is your problem the update dialog coming up? If it's the problem with failing to download the data file, please follow the steps I gave NEoWolfen and e-mail me your log files at carielf at stardock.com
