Question about mageek

so i was playing my first game with the AI on hard, was neck and neck with an empire with 5x my score, basically turtling and expanding inside myshell getting ready to push back, when bam volcano on my capital city and one of my two metal producing cities, completely destroyed the one and put my capital back to nothing.....

on one hand i was like, huh, good for you ai, your improving, i mean i wasnt going to use any poopy spells on you, but hey, you go girl....

on the other hand i was like, WTFBBQ no warning, just BAM and two cities virtually wiped out.... LAME

my question is, as it stands, is their any way to counter game altering spells like that? If so, how?

Awesome.  Thats great that the ai can do that.  Wow, can't wait to see the AI do that to me.

Wow. That was very nearly a specific request I made in that thread about improving the AI. Heh.

That's actually awesome to hear.

As for countering it, I don't think they have spells to protect/prevent. There's the "Spell Immunity" to prevent high level magic from just outright killing an important hero (or your sovereign). However, city protection magic is still limited.

In Master of Magic, the Sorcery spells had a number of overland spell prevention stuff. I'd like to see those make a comeback.

The volcano spell has a 5-square range. If going to war against an AI who can cast this spell, scout your borders and wipe out any champions you see. It takes a champion with INT>36 for them to cast it (unless their Sovereign casts it).

does the champ have to be within a certain distance of the spell?

After that i changed my play strategy, i rush city building and getting my ZOC blocking entry to my cities, try to bottleneck them so they only see one city in the beginning, then go from there (expand out when they declare war, set up a second defensive line just in case, etc.

It used to be you could protect your cities from enemy spells. But I don't know if somethigns been changed.. (prolly ahs since there so many changes^^) but I couldn't find any counter spell in any of the spell books my Sov knows that protects my Empires cities from Volcano. Seems the only way to protect your cities fromt hat spell is building a mountain range that keeps enemy Sov's & Heros out of range to cast taht spell on your city. I havn't finished my current game thats trying to test that strat out. Has anyone else done so allready?

I think someone in my game has used the volcano or something, the game screen started shaking, but I didn't lose a city, so it might have been AI vs AI, but now the game won't stop shaking...

Massively destructive strategic spells need some sort of "warm up period" to give the receiving player a chance to defend.
