Elemental - The spiritual successor to..

X-Com.

The predecessor is Master of Magic, of course, but a re-make of X-Com with the Elemental engine would be good, in my opinion. The mechanics are there, squad based combat, squad leveling up (XCom had individual units though, not groups), building up of bases, and so on.

Why this thought popped into my mind is that the talk of remakes has been there for successful games, like Final Fantasy 7, which had a tremendous storyline, and though I tried to play it again, the polygonal graphics didnt look as good as I remembered long time ago. I never played XCom Apocalypse so dont know how its graphics were, but I wonder how many would be willing to pay for a graphically enhanced version (with new story elements of course) of X-Com. This might also give Brad a chance to write another novel for the X-Com universe.. "Alien Embers" or such.

Dude. If you liked X-Com, you should really consider giving this one a try. Some people hate, but I liked it the best of the series. The graphics have aged better than some others'. The only problem I have with them were intentional designs by the developers. Alien guns look like hairy purple pig snouts, for example.

If you do get it, buy from Impulse or another place that comes with DOS-Box already configured.

No, it would not. X-com tactical combat is completely different then MoM or Elemental

Xcom Apoc was a great game. The only reason people say they don't like it is because it has a different feel to it than ufo defense or terror did. The first 2 games felt more like horror games while apoc felt more controlable. Mainly because the maps are brighter and sight lines bigger in apoc, so it feels like you can actually spot the monsters before they are 3 feet from your guys, but still.

Give it a try, its worth playing. Also, configuring dosbox is easy. Don't get it from steam though, they don't believe in updating dosbox.

That title's definitely due for a remake.

It is being remade. Unfortunately, it's being remade as a FPS.

No, I'm not kidding.

funny how xcom apoc was.... unfinished... given all those concepts that were in interviews of game mags but never made it into the game. i like the pausable real time stuff though..

quite a few amateur versions of xcom type game out there i think... there's the german once called x-force.. which i don't think is really going anywhere (looks about the same for the last few years!)... xenocide died.. ufo:ai is probably the one to watch..

I'm surprised X-Com Apoc got so many good reactions :-) . It was savaged by reviewers, from what I remember.

Still, after bringing Elemental to where GalCiv is right now in a year or two, Stardock could possibly start another cycle of Release Unfinished / Patch Continuously / Brickbats and Bouquets with the "Spiritual successor to X-Com"..

Edit: Just checked the Impulse store, and X-Com Apoc is there, only 5 $ (18 bucks in local currency), but sorry, this Item is available only in US and North America. The screen shots look quite a bit like the original X-com's.

No, I'm not kidding.

Looking forward to it - as a shooter.  There have been a host of failed XCOM clones and if XCOM goes sort of like Fallout 3's reboot, I would be thrilled.

think the problem was... too many ideas talked about and not delivered. which sounds like a lot of games!  as for impulse store. nothing more silly than getting promo email... only to find out "us/na only"

It's interesting to hear you say that, because I always felt way more out of control in Apocalypse than the first two.

I like the style/feel/tech of the first game best. I like the two part missions from the second game.

In terms of the "remake"; I will play it because it looks freaking cool. It is, however, NOT an X-Com game, and never will be. Much the same way that the last two "Fallout" games are fun, but most decidedly not "Fallout" games. They just happen to share the humor and art style.

For xcom apoc, most of the ideas they talked about actually made it into the game, they just didn't get used. If you look through the files there are tons of things for weapons and gear that never actually show up in game. Apoc is loaded with stuff like that. Rather than saying its unfinished, its more like it was finished, and they ended up giving us a beta build instead of the final build, right before they actually implemented all the features.

I heard that UFO: Aftermath had a lot of the original developers of the x-com series.  I have played it and it is very much in the spirit of the good ol' X-com franchise.  Not technicaly a sequal since the "X-Com" licence was held tightly (and is only now being 're-imagined').
