1.09t overrun with spiderling armies on Normal.

Is anyone else finding themselves overun by spiderling armies? Everywhere I turn there seems to be another group of 5 spiderlings with a battle rating of 27 ready to pulverise my poor armourless units, this is early game on normal.

I may be misunderstanding things but I have an adventurer with 4 ap who can only move 2 squares per round in tactical battles, is this correct?

Thanks for any help.

Usual suspects:

Sometimes it's difficult to hunt down the lonely ones when they are close to one of those and your army is still using diapers. :P

I've noticed this as well. However, the only real trouble I've had are the 28 HP Wolves and Bears. I ended up hiring and marrying Rilis, who has Leather Armor and an Oak Spear, and she can handle just about any number of Spiderlings.

This game cured my arachnophobia. I also had a case of luposlipaphobia that is now solved. However, my case of Januskphobia appears to be worse. Two steps forward, one step back...

You have suggested the solution yourself. Get armor! While I agree that in some games you get swamped a little to early, in most games just researching equipment or having a tough Sov off the bat will allow you to survive long enough to fight back. Leather and to a lesser degree padding makes all your units monster slayers. Sure the game is challenging at the start now but that's a good thing.

The problem is that the experience starting in a coast with barely forests and starting in an area sorroudnded by forests is really different. From one point of view, it's fine because it forces us, the players, to adapt to what the game throws us to the face. But starting on a coast with barely a few trees to spawn monsters is cakewalk, while starting sorrounded by forests becomes annoying quite soon.

Spiders are actually easy as they don't have much strength and their hit points aren't so big. Some versions of bandits can cause more damage and bears are the most troublemakers (now that hyperwolves are out). Spears for high damage and some leather are best. Champions are best if possible but not reliable each game (Janusk may be if you use him).

Dealing with loners as soon as it's possible is best as long as they are close. I had never lose my capital. Never. Until some ninja bandits stabbed me the other day while I had my main army a few tiles away. And if you give them time, they have no trouble creating raves. Some groups like those of the pic during the first turns (50 or so?) are not nice to deal with, specially if they are in different directions but all "close" to the city. Glad that the Faction AI is still so dumb that cannot take advantage of my troubles. :P

The solution to this is obvious really....

Sea Monsters!

I agree that the difficulty needs to stay, but if the chance of grouping was reduced so your allowed to kill a few loners, build up experience for your units and make some extra gold from the kills so you can afford the armour when it becomes available would be good on normal.

As Wintersong said, this is mainly an issue in forested zones but this could be pretty off putting for  average players (not that I'm implying I'm above average) when starting out.  Once the Ai is improved things could get brutal out there people :waaaa: .

Absolutely loving the game though, it's so much more fun now and the commitment that stardock has shown is really paying off, just some small things that spoil it like the message spam.
