Beta [1.09s] - Too Many Monsters

Hello,

I've checked around and I seem to be the only one having a problem with this, but the game is completely unplayable for me due to the high numbers of wandering critters and bandits that now exist.  I've started five games in the last hour, and all of them saw my first and only city destroyed by creatures within 20-30 turns.  I even got knocked out of the game on turn 10 by a group of spiders (CR 28) that destroyed my city and the sovereign defending it.

Again, I've looked at some of the recent posts for the beta, and it seems  everyone else is slaughtering monsters left and right.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but this has gone well past ridiculous for me.  As I said above, the game is now unplayable.

Well... there are a lot of monsters.  I accept Janusk's services, rename him Bob, and put him in my capital with the best weapon I can afford and whatever defensive items are available.  Any lone monsters that come with in striking distance I deal with before they can horde with others; the hordes I deal with when they attack.  I also find myself researching Warfare first to get some better defensive options, and building an offensive unit prior to even bothering with a pioneer.

My sovereign goes wandering during all this.

I wood allso add that wolves are a bit to strong. many of the wandering wolves right at the start of the game have 24hp this should be more like 14hp.

What is the difficulty level you choose for your world when you setup the game?

There are quite a few monsters at the start of the game. You have to tread carefully, and get some basic troops  (boar spears) out as fast as syou can. Naked troops with just boar spears can deal with most early game monsters.

I've found things are A LOT harder if you try to use troops with anything weaker. Peasants simply do not cut it at all, except against tiny spiders.

So... if there are so many creatures that cities get destroyed (even when defended) by wandering mobs.... Where the hell are the thousands of people migrating to me cities from?  I mean if there are thousands of people around, and hungry wolves with WAY better stats than them.  How is humanity surviving long enough to join a channeler?

That is why they are joining. It is more safe in the city, or that is the popular opinion among them. Seems from these posts they are often wrong :D

I am so afraid that they will nerf the monsters I'm almost willing to say it's perfect.  It would be 10 times worse if that the monsters are too weak than a little too strong.  Only affects the first 30 or so turns.  If they are too weak it makes the entire game more sucky.

As reply #7 says, a bit stronger is better than too weak. I would recommend you just lower your world difficulty a bit and see if that helps you.

Okay, I'm only playing on Medium, so that shouldn't really factor into it.  Also, it's not that they're "a little bit stronger".  I can take a mob or two in fights.  My problem is with the sheer numbers.  I eventually just get overwhelmed.

I like the monsters. It adds personality to the game. Also makes the beginning of the game more interesting becasue it's challenging. No limitless expanding without even having to build any troops until 50 turns in. I just usually get equipment right of the start and build lightly armored spear guys. One or two in each city will keep the monsters away. Same deal with Sov. Get him a level or two, a weapon and even one piece of armor and he is basically wolf and spider proof. Troops really aren't that hard to get, you just gotta adjust your play style. Try making a custom Sov that can fight off the start.

I named him Tinactin.  It makes him more tough actin'

I'm coming across some pockets of wandering monsters in early-mid game as well (on Challenging). While I don't mind the monsters themselves I am getting a little bored fighting the constant battles (I don't trust Auto Resolve in the slightest).

Someone finally caught on to the secret of my success!1!

I have to admit, lately I've been naming him based on the clothing he shows up in - Purple Dude, Greyman, etc.  Probably stick with Bob for the white shirt.

  • Heya bro, it is kinda nuts... but it sure is fun. 1 sugestion I have for you is that as soon as your 1st settlement hits lvl 2 select Random Unit Spawn. Note; units you recieve are random, so if you want a speficic type you will have to reload from the end of the turn -before- your city levels up; I've seen reloads at the start of the level up turn become static with only 1 unit type after a few tries. Personally I prefer the 5 wolves rewarded out of all the diferent units you can get, but there are other single unit spawns with much better stats. The wolves base movement of 3 allows them to tag along with your heros & gives them alot of attacks in tactical combat with the option to retreat after a few hits to keep them alive. So, with 5 wolves & 1 hero with a spear, or warstaff, & 2 or more points of armor & you'll see your main city safe for a long while.

FYI, I play on re-donkey-lus... epic is best ^^

It's challenging now to get your first town up and running but, I've also had starts where your town is wiped out before you even finish your first building. Maybe limit the amount of creatures for the first 10-15 turns so the first town doesn't get wiped out by the first passing group of creatures.

Playing on an island map, I've come across some small islands that are nothing but wall to wall creatures, I'm not sure I understand the point of spawning so many creatures when there are no player or AI towns around!

I dont know you, OP, or the rest of the players, but the best advice I can give is be patient. This isn't another RTS like Supreme Commander or StarCraft where you have to rush everything. There's even less of a rush than in Sins of a solar Empire, and that's a slow game as well. Just keep close to main base for a good many turns until it's got a big inf ring. At least then monsters will spawn far away from your sttelement rather than adjacent to it. Make sure al lyour guys have god move. And then just troll around your place killing dudes til you get a decent defender.

This wolf is right at the start of the game it is way to strong. it can take out both Janusk and the soveren. untill I have the eqipment teck.

In fact the wolf is stronger then bears and darklings. since it has 6 att 2 def 28 hp and has a wolf it gets a speed bost in combat. the beging monsters I think shoudl be equiel to a staff armed troop wich is probbly the best you will have for the first 20 or so rounds

Yeah, it is pretty lame when the game starts... and ends 2 turns later due to a wolf stopping by for lunch.

Sir, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or condescending.

Now I'm really beginning to wonder how many people actually read my OP.  I HAVE NO TIME to be patient.  The group of five spiders that crushed me on turn 10, or the three bandits that circled my city and wore down my defences didn't wait to attack every three turns while I built a new defender.

Also, if the opening strategy for a game that includes things like quests and the hunting down of glowies for a crucial advantage is to sit on your butt and build for 50 turns, then something is broken.

I have been playing this game since it was released, and in all the versions I've played I've never felt this defenceless in the opening turns.

I rename to Chuck Norris and change the backstory to "182,000 wolves and spiders die from Chuck Norris-related accidents every season."

I feel ya. I am playing more defensively that I have previously. Getting basic weapons/armor upgrade has superseded the civics branch of the tech tree. I rename Janusk "Mercutio" I make sure my capital is secure before branching out. I haven't figured out all the  nuances--in addition to the monsters I am experiencing economic issues. I am just trying to balance defense/survival with economic prosperity.

I have to say I like the changes so far--hard to list because of the fast updates though.

  • Same here; but for myself I feel like at least now I'm facing a challenge. I wonder what sort of Sov/faction you keep trying to play with>? Mix up your starting strat a bit. Take the war tech, get yourself some better weapons early. Perhaps concentrate on combat stats more & when your in tactical combat make the enemy come to your units after you get them onto a spot with +10def; helps alot... idk; good luck bro. Hope you find your groove.

P.S.:  I still think it needs to be harder on rediculous though. }:) hehe

I wasnt being condescending or sarcastic. What I notice is that this is a much slower than than most of the RTS's I play, even the 4x ones. There is absolutely no need to rush or dominate the feild, which is what I usually do and expect other people to do.

Also, I had read your post, but I will apologize because I hadn't played the beta yet before posting. All the monsters were much more powerful than usual and I had to stop playing for the same reasons you did.
