Will Stardock get the 1.9 gig update bug fixed?

Will Stardock get the 1.9 gig update bug fixed?

hey guys, are you working on a fix for the having to downgrade to the non-beta then back up to the current beta version to avoid a 1.9 gig update?

Also, I always try and post saved games, error logs, custom sov. files, crashes, screen shots etc but I feel like I'm being ignored when I post bugs, nothing is ever done about them.

Just did 1.09u and again it was 1.9gb. I'm now runnign at 10gb for the month on just elemental alone.

See towards the end of this thread for a workaround.  It is a bit of fiddling around but it means you should be able to get each patch for less than 100 MB (maybe 60-80) rather than 2 GB every patch.

Best regards,
Steven.

I did a fresh install of 1.09e via Impulse on Win 7-x64 lately, which I archived after installation.

Checking "Show pre-release versions" showed an availiable update to 1.09t Beta with a download size of ~2gb, but the "unchecking and verifying trick" reduced it to ~40mb. For the next minor update to 1.09u Beta Impulse again wanted me to download >2gb and unfortunately the "unchecking and verifying trick" also indicated a 2gb download for the step back from 1.09t Beta to 1.09e.

Obviously that was not an option and so I uninstalled and wanted to restore my archived 1.09e installation. Guess what, the restore function just doesn't work. It messes around with archive checking and activating (*sigh* how many activations before I have to contact support to prove myself of not being a pirate?) and that's all. I also tried the "Disable custom skin" option in preferences, but restoring stays broken.

Now downloading 2gb for every minor update wouldn't bother me too much because I have a fast internet flatrate, but the waste of traffic on Stardock's side must be cazy and together with the broken restore function this doesn't show Impulse in a very favourable light. I would be glad to see those glitches fixed.

puntarenas, I have heard that they have located the point of problem and that a impluse dev will have the issue added to their to do list.

and I also am having the 2.2gb downloads UNLESS I click on the blue button , then REMOVE the tick from show pre-release/beta, then 'SHIFT' right mouse click on elemental, then left mouse click on verify installation, download AND install the ~40mb update back to 1.09e, then click on the blue button and tick show beta's, THEN update to the latest beta patch( typically ~45mb), and the 2gb downloads take me approx 5 HOURS to download, so if I can avoid it I will.

Thats rather strange. It tells me 2gb size but when it gets down to  the actual download size its 50ish mb give or take. Are people actually seeing 2gb downloads when they update or are they seeing the reported size and assuming its that big. Or am i just special?

Well, even though I cant keep up with the sheer frequency of patches (I'm not complaining - just didn't get to play some of them) I can confirm that this has happened right through to (and including) 1.09v. To the earlier question - digital download, Vista 64bit. I've updated all 1.x/2.x GB once (1.09n??) but then reverted via the back-dating process (no-beta - verifying install etc).

Not a huge issue given the workaround and/or a fast internet connection; more annoying than anything - but could be a 'deal breaker' for some.

Be good to get some steps you want us to follow to capture some debug for the next update...

It actually downloads 2gb (well, 1.91gb). Or at least it tries to. I let the first one complete, but recently I've let it go to about 100mb to check if it is just misreported. It's not. So I cancel and do the revert-to-1.09e trick.

it's not just the speed, most isp have some sort of bandwidth cap.

The problem is still there with subversion 'v'

Again i only had a 50 mb download for V. Is everyone who's having issues running vista or 7? Only reason i could think of you all having the problem and not me is different impulse client versions. Im running 32 bit xp.

This  intrigues me that so many have the issue and I don't.

Win 7 /vista have a separate impulse client than Xp so the cause could well be in the win7/vista client. Would explain why I don't have the issue.

yes the machine I am testing the beta's on IS a win7 64 bit, perhaps it's actual cause IS a impulse on 64 bit issue.

Yes, 64 bit Win7

yep nothing.. having to download the whole 2gb again despite the verify trick.. >:(

vaul, sounds like stardock needs some help from you to help locate the bug, I hope that kris emails you asking for you to help track the problem down

It would be nice if someone explained why the stardock updater wants to download 1.9 gb every time. I was hoping it would have been fixed by now. It must be costing someone a lot of bandwidth.

Impulse Win7-x64 drives me nuts.

Again I wasn't able to get the small 40MB patch from 1.09u to 1.09w no matter what. After several Shift-RightClick-Verify attempts Impulse at least was able to downgrade to 1.09e with a small 40mb download, but for installation of 1.09w Impulse insisted on a 2gb file transfer.

I was thinking of uninstalling and restoring from an archive (which works for me now after I did a "download and archive" instead of "Install" and afterwards "Archive Application" btw). Before that I wanted to check if there was a new Impulse Beta availiable and therefore activated "Show Pre-Release (Alpha/Beta) Versions" in the global preferences. To my surprise Impulse offered me the small 40mb patch to 1.09w Beta instead of the 2gb download afterwards.

Strange, but seems it makes some diference where you activate the "show pre-release versions" inside of Impulse.

Same here; 1.9gb again on 1.09v patch.

my personal sequence on one of my win7 64bit systems is

1 start impulse

2 check for updates

3 then see new patch for elemental is out

4 then test the update to the new patch, if size during download is over 50mb , cancel,

5 click on blue stardock button, then remove the tick from 'show pre-release software'

6 hold down shift key on keyboard while right mouse clicking on elemental, then left click on verify installation in the rightclick menu

7 when instaltion has verified as wrong and offers a update to latest release(not beta) typically 40mb

8 install update

9 after update is installed click on blue stardock button and tick 'show pre-release software'

10 impulse shows update to latest beta

11 download and install update (typically 40-50mb)

12 close impulse

13 start elemental create a new game with my custom sov & race on megamap (with a modified special line to 0 so that resources WILL spawn) and each of the ten factions at different levels, but the world at normal, then play until crash (or in theory win but has not happened yet)

14 post about the crash & upload the zip with all the my games/elemental folders other than maps & screenshots & dxdiags

15 depending upon time of day either load elemental again and load save game OR if late & tired go to bed

Could it be so simple? I actually clicked the global prefs as well and never saw the issue....

i log on now to the 1.1 update (which i am happy for) but another 2gb download!!.. i cannot believe this has not been fixed yet!!

1.09n[b].108->1.1... only 40.12 MB

win7 64

seems to have gone fine (haven't gone in game yet)

i noticed that my "beta" tickbox wasn't ticked after i updated... maybe it wasn't ticked when i did the update..

I had ver. 1.09w and update size to 1.1 was 1.41gb, but impulse downloaded only ~9 mb and thats it.

I had a 1.09w, and the actual downloading size was 1.91GB during the download, and the computers that had 1.09d only 45mb, on the beta testing box I had to uninstall elemental and re-install from the dvd 1.00, then it was only 220mb
