Silly idea for Libraries and Arcane Temples - Specialize them....

How about 5 lost libraries on the map, each one gives you double reserach for a particular area of reseach.  Kind of like wonders of the world.

If you have 10 research points from studys in your empire, then the "Warfare" lost library grants you 20 points per turn when researching warfare tech.

And 6 (or however many spellbook types) of arcane temples as well, each of which gives the owner a 100% arcane research bonus (entire empire research) on spells related to that type of spellbook.....

Right now they just don't have enough personality, like the farms and mines do....

It also might be cool to place a guard stack of creatures on them so you have to conquer them in order to use them.

Way, way, way too powerful. They'd end up dominating the game as world objects far more than even Elemental Shards do currently, which would just be crazy.

How about just a flat bonus to the specified resarch type, then?  Like Plus 8 or something...  Just something to make the world a little more interesting.

I like your idea greggbert but this is how I would modify it:

The lost libraries could give say a +15% to all research or +25% to a specific branch. This bonus would only apply to the city its connected to. This would definitely create more uniqueness to the game. The game is a war of resources and it would certainly add to that aspect of the game. For instance if capitar is militarily strong, you might look to see if they have a military library which is fueling their research. This would open up the tactic of stealing their library (or destroying it) to negate their bonus and possibly get the bonus yourself.

I'd like the idea of themed lost libraries, but instead of a research bonus to specific branches, I'd like to see them give you a unique technology of the said branch.  i.e. warfare gives you access to some kind of unique weapon tech or something.  You could protect them with powerful guardians to keep them from being game-breaking in the early game.  I think it could be fun and add some flair to the questing and lore of the game.

Yop, defenitly agree to add some flavor to the lost library (LL) and arcane temple (AT). Like Luckmann said, it's way too powerful to add a 100% bonus worldwide, but adding some % to a connect city and/or have a special tech attach to it seems really funny. It could also be tied to the questing tech or something similar to add more challenged when conquered. Or maybe, combine the questing to be able to conquer them, place monster guardian to protect them and after, add some research in it to "unlock" the lost tech and then research it.

Here here, good concept.

You could even make them progressive by tying the benefits to tech levels.

Low-level utilization (available to undeveloped players) - grants bonus to spell/magic research, maybe even a low-level unique spell unavailable in spellbooks.

Moderate-level utilization (available to moderately developed players)- grants increased bonuses, etc.

High-level utilization (available to advanced players)- grants increased bonuses, perhaps some unique high-level spell or unit (like a Mana Golem or some such)

If you wanted to restructure the game more deeply you could even have the sites hold parts of the Spell of Making or the Master Forge (these would of course be available only at the highest levels of development).

This would keep them relevant throughout the game as locations to be held by those who have them, and as sites of interest for those who dont.

I'm all for increased variety just for varieties sake.  I'm also interested in things which offer more choices of opportunity.

I'd enjoy seeing Martial Art Academies, Farming COOPs, X Mage Collectives, Stewardships of Knowledge, etc etc.  ..Various resources which represent specialised NPC communities which the player can align with by incorporating them within a cities border.  These resources aiding research into specific tech trees, and perhaps for particular techs.  I've pen and papered some thoughts for future modding once the game gets more stabilized.
