The Walking Dead!

Anyone watch "The Walking Dead" on AMC?

I was really surprised how good the first episode was and am looking forward to next weeks. Let us know what you thought or if you plan to watch it.

Super duper love it.  They did a great job with it.  That scene with the tank was excellent, imo.

Watched it. Liked it. Looking forward to watching more. It has the potential to be really good, while, admittedly, it should not try to stretch itself too far. It's a plot that can only last so many episodes; like Jericho, there is only so much meaningful story you can get through without loosing the edge. I could be mistaken, though; the screenwriters may be more inventive than me. (Not completely impossible, I admit.).

Its following very closely to the comic book so far - and they easily have at least 3 seasons of material without doing any real stretching.  Even if you are only moderately interested in comics, you really should pick of a trade of the first book - I can pretty much guarantee you'll read them all after that.

And believe me... without giving anything away, it doesn't lose its edge in the comic - hopefully they keep pushing the limits in the TV show.

The entire "End of the World" scenario has a lot of story possibility.  They could take this and run with it for at least 5 seasons without stretching much of anything.

Knowing nothing of the comics myself, and having just watched the pilot, here are possible topics they could explore:

  • Who's left?  Finding the small pockets of survivors, and how everyone is coping with the zombie apocalypse.  Are there towns untouched?
  • How did it happen?  Explore the cause of the zombie outbreak
  • What becomes the new status quo?  After a certain point, everything reaches a new balance and people try to get to some new state of normal.  What does that look like?
  • Is there a cure?  A lot of effort will go into either a cure or an immunization.
  • Reestablishment of society and order.  Somewhere there's going to be a new government forming, or an old government trying to re-settle the country.
  • What happened in the rest of the world?  Right now, we know the eastern half of the US is screwed.  Is it nation-wide?  Entire continent?  The Whole hemisphere?  The entire world?  Are there safe zones?  This right here is room for endless seasons of content exploring what folks in Europe, China, India, S. America etc do to get by.

This is pretty edgy content.  A series like this can really explore the "End of the World" scenario in a way nothing else can.  We live in a world terrified of the bird flu, swine flu, and whatever other disease du jour there may be.  In decades past, it was nuclear Armageddon.  Now it's disease.  With Zombies, you have the scenario, but you also have a constant enemy to struggle against, something you can point at and go "Bad!"  You can't do that with an invisible virus or a nuclear wasteland.

This is one of the most rich concepts in modern storytelling overall, and incredibly relevant socially at the moment.  You can take every major theme in modern society, every trend, culture, behavior etc and apply it into this show for new content and story ideas.

I don't think they'll run out of ideas any time soon.

In the comic, there are pockets of people in many places - most seem to form some sort of community, but... well, something is often "off" about the people they find.

How did it happen? Explore the cause of the zombie outbreak

in the comic, they haven't even sorted that out yet.

Is there a cure? A lot of effort will go into either a cure or an immunization.

So far the one cure is a shot in the head in the comic as well.

What happened in the rest of the world?

Not even touched in the comic yet.

Anyway, I know you are throwing your 2 cents in there and I just wanted to provide a few more comparisons to the comic.  No idea how close they are going to stick to the comic, but they have captured the mood/suspense/horror really well so far.  Here's hoping it doesn't end up like another heroes (good 1st season, abysmal everything else - imo, of course).

Other then the crazy amount of fluff (which I'll toss up to being because it's the first episode), I LOVED it. Watched it 3 times, probably going to watch it again with the Fiancee tonight :)

Great show, great effects and acting. Can't wait for more.

Entertainment wise, I don't care if very human on the planet devours one another but it pulled a heart string seeing that hoarse go down. Other movies as well like Legends German Shepard dieing brought a tear to my eye but I couldn't care less about the human race. That is not normal is it?

People mistake me for a zombie all the time but honestly I'm not. :-"

For any that are interested, the series has diverged a bit from the ongoing comic.  Though they'v done it in a way that's not really all that bad and actually good, imo.  The comic is full of meaningful, sad/beautiful/tragic moments like they are emulating in the show.  Anyway, shame season 1 is over already.  I'm really looking forward to the next season and am not thrilled about waiting a year or so to see it again.  Great show, though.  I really hope they don't have any major missteps with writing in the future.

There's a great British show called Survivors for anyone wanting more post-apocalyptic action now that the Walking Dead is over.  It doesn't have zombies though, some sort of plague has wiped out most of the planet and it touches all the topics Zoomba mentioned he would like to see Walking Dead get into.  The second series ended in February and I think it's been canceled now because it didn't get a lot of viewers, but it was very good in my opinion.

Everything's available online Pacov, I know you like to pay for stuff though and I don't know how to help you find it that way.  The fastest way would be usenet, otherwise I could find you a .torrent file.  You're brak___@_____.com right?  I can e-mail it to you if you want it.

That last episode was awesome, didn't expect Rick to stab Shane.

Follow up necro.  Whatcha doing mr spoiler?

It really was one of the few moments in my long TV watching experience that I was truly shocked.  I expected Rick to talk him down, or anything that would end in both being alive.  Amazing.

Yeah, I know this is a necro thread, but BBC HD is running Survivors 2 ATM... so my mother tells me.  It is in fact a remake of an earlier release by Terry Nation back in the 70's  Some of the characters are slightly different but the premise is the same... apocalyptic survival... and great TV viewing.  It's also available on DVD/Bluray in BBC Shops and selected stores... for those who can't see it on TV.

Edit: Re the show being canceled....

Season 1 and the early episodes of season 2 were shown in an early evening time slot and had good ratings.  However, the BBC put the show on a break during the early episodes and when the show returned it was with little or no advertising and at a much later time slot... hence the viewer decline, which was not a true indicator of the show's quality or popularity.

In other words, the BBC took a leaf out of the book of US TV stations and sabotaged the show to air some cheap to produce reality crap that nobody gives a shit about.

I am fine with Shane Dead. He should have left ages ago. But I am still having a hard time with the killing of Dale. He was one of my favorite characters and really brought alot of interesting moral aspects into postapocalyptia. I find it interesting that the most stable and least stable characters have been killed off. The execution of dramatic irony was spot on though. Telling the viewer that those crazy raiders are just 5 miles away was thrilling. Too bad we lost two expert riflemen over stupid bullshit. They will likely lose the farm now in a full scale attack.

The other thing this episode made me want to do is learn how to make landmines from scratch. Maybe some of those Ewok traps too. You always need to consider the possibility that your farm will be overrun by murderous raiders with heavy guns.

P.S. Anyone watching Doomsday Preppers? That show rocks!

re: walking dead - if you've ever read the comics (you should, btw), you'll see alot more holy crap stuff.  Suffice to say that if they go a prison, I expect some very interesting/ horrific things will happen.

spoiler fun...

re: rick killing shane - this happened alot earlier in the comic with carl actually shooting the live shane when his dad was threatened.  I think it was a great build up in the tv series seeing shane slowly becoming unraveled... how rick's wife actually pushed him over the edge.  I didn't expect the knife either, but I expected shane was going to die.  A bit of a bummer considering how great of an actor he turned out to be.  I expect we will see 1-4 more die at the farm in the season finale... and I predict they will be forced to leave the farm or "decide" to.  Some will stay.. some will go... and methinks the one's that go might find a prison...

Love this show! Seeing how morality goes away and people become dog-eat-dog is exactly what would happen when Big Brother dies and the Center falls apart.

I couldn't believe Dale died, I really couldn't believe Shane died; he was the second most important character behind Rick. If Shane could die in this show, then anyone can die. That's another reason why this show is great; there's no other great TV show, that I've ever seen, in which the main characters get written out of the script so blatantly (and when they do, it's usually because of something in their personal life: death, pregnancy, getting fired [charlie sheen in 2&1/2 men |-) ] etc...).

You know there's gonna be major carnage in this next episode! With another Walker-horde en route to the farm (and the group's main gunner, Shane, dead), I predict 1 of the main group (probably Carol), and 1 or 2 of the Herschel group (probably the blonde sister and Otis' wife) will bite the bullet in the season 2 finale. This is the only TV show that I actually look forward to watching!
