The "magic" part is simply not fun.... Age of Wonders:Shadow Magic has some lessons

I want to see magic that turns entire worlds into fertile paradise or black ash... I want magic that strikes incoming armies with swarms of insects and hailstones every turn, making your lands protected against foes b/c the world itself will rise against them..... I want to see magic that changes, transmutes and has a visible impact upon the world around it and upon foes and allies....

I want to see magic that turns shards into pulsating bombs that explode in devastation or a poison shard spell that drains away magic from the owning mage....  I want to see volcanoes that are raised and then send lava out to devastate and destroy.....

Quite frankly, the magic is not very magical in the game.

I beleive they know the magic system needs a through overhaul, Check the journals 1.1 will include a through magic overhaul not just spell changes but the whole way magic works.
