[Destiny's Embers] Just curious, how's the Elemental Book?
So while I wait for the game to be patched up, I'm wondering if anyone's read the companion book Elemental: Destiny's Embers? Is it an interesting story worth picking up?

Perhaps, but the grammar and punctuation are really hard to get past. I've parsed through the first couple pages on Amazon (since they allow you read selected passages) and it's a tough read since there was virtually no real editing.
I read the first 25ish pages as well. I was hoping for something better, but it read worse than my crappy emails and posts! Perhaps I read too many books....
It's really, really bad. No offense.
I have the actual paper back. I'm currently about 1/4 of the way through the book and it's not that bad. It's not the next Lord of the Rings mind you, but it's a fun fantasy novel none the less.
I've heard nothing but bad things.
Well, actually, there's one 5-star review on Amazon that's (apparently) written by Brad's wife. I very much doubt that it's actually his wife, but it's a pretty damn funny troll.
I finished reading the book today. Some parts could have been worded better, but overall I enjoyed the story. I liked it enough that if he writes a sequel I'll be getting it.
is it just me is this in black text in your post?
Got somethin against black?;)
I had to increase the font size, but yeah its black. ![]()
ok so we need to highlight it read it heh heh
I'm about half-way through it right now. It's not horrible like some people make it out to be, but it isn't Pulitzer material either. Some of the grammar and punctuation is definitely weird, but as long as you're not some sort of grammar nazi
you can probably enjoy the book. The story isn't super original, but it isn't too bad either. If I were to compare it to, say, all of the Star Wars novels, I'd say it's better than most of them, but not as good as the Timothy Zahn ones (they're similar genre, books based of existing IP's) if that helps at all.
And since this is certainly going to come up, I'll address it now. It's about a racist as the Lord of the Rings. If you think the LOTR is full of racist undertones, you'll think the same thing about Destiny's Embers (I will think you're a nutjob for thinking LOTR is racist, but hey, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine
).
If you like the book you might want to comment at Amazon
So far it's not doing so well, possibly due to some "enemies" of Wardell (mentioned in another thread by a Stardock employee), possibly because it's just not good. Haven't read the book myself, can't comment on that.
If you grab the Kindle PC app from Amazon, you can get a preview of the first part of the book.
It is a ghost written book. As in I believe Brad wrote some of it and another may have done some writing and stitching. It has that feel.
But not bad, I have read worse. The story is good, one has to remember, this was done while making the game, as well.
I always find it funny to hear folks who have never written a book attack one.
Lee
I enjoyed it, its not amazing - but its not half as bad as what has been claimed and I'll probably pick up the sequel when/if its released.
I enjoyed it, too. It's a typical fantasy book. Nothing special, but not that bad as some people are complaining.
Some say it's the LOTR for this generation.
To be fair, the story was somewhat intriquing, the style it was written in was more my issue than anything. As I said, I only read the first 25 pages, so obviously not a full on review. I wish the book well.
A good story, it could be written better
I think most people haven't written a book, I also think that people are capable of judging if something they read is good or bad. You don't need to write a book first to be able to say 'this sucks'.
I agree. Same with making a game, movie, or anything really. If you haven't made one yourself you have no right to comment or criticize it!
^^^So movie critic reviews aren't valid because they have never made a big budget film?^^^
It's pretty bad. I mean I was pretty lenient with it because Brad Wardell is a game programmer, not a novelist. But holy jeez the atrocious grammar, coupled by the fact that there was an actual novelist that was writing alongside Brad, made me stop reading it a good 30 pages through. It reads at a grade 4 education level, and that's being polite.
I'm enjoying the game, though ![]()
Good or bad I won a free signed copy of it which is supposed to be mailed out this week. So once I get it we will read it for shits and giggles at the very least.
Win win!
