Razing a city salts the earth?

It was my understanding that when you raze a city the land should clear after a couple turns.. I've been waiting at least 30 and the land has yet to clear. when I raze the city of a minor faction I want to be able to build a proper growing city on top of it.. if the tiles won't clear automatically is there a way to clear them manually?

As i recall it was a design decision to disallow you from upgradeing minor civ citys you conquer. (if i'm wrong please correct me).

So i'm guessing the land will NEVER clear in a bid to stop you doing what you've just suggested.

Before you raze the city, go to the building menu and destroy all the buildings you can. You will then only have one 'salted' tile.

The Level 5? Earth spell "blistering sands" MAY clear them I have not tried it though.

*Edit*

Just checked, it does.

Yeah, we complained about this in beta. I'm not sure if it may be intended to discourage razing though.

Also remember that you can make a city on the salted earth, you just can't build improvements. So as someone mentioned, tearing down all the improvements first is a work-around, so is blistering sands. I'd like them to make it melt away in 10-15 turns though.
