First strike way too important?

First strike way too important?

It seems to me that a first attack can be extremely devestating. It's a good thing that the AI is dumb enough to approach you any old way, or else combat would never resolve. The first person who moves into attack range dies. This gets alot worse when parties and squads are involved, because taking a big hit reduces your ability to retaliate.

Multiplayer's gonna be great fun, as the players each wait and wait and wait for the other guy to move in range...

actually, this hero is quite needed to speed up the army's movement. if u take the 'organized' trait, get some items/spells that increase movemet, or use teleport spells, u can move those powerful but slow unit fairly easily. mobility is, quite frankly, the only thing heroes excel at late game. however, having a hero with ~30 hp, 60 attack and 100 def isn't that hard, and atm i can't see how a caster beats that, when spells miss most of the time..

i hope that devs will put some thought into all those aspects in near future. it will surely take some time and effort to straighten everything up, but we're not in any kind of rush, aren't we? ;)

They should make it exactly like MoM.  All attacks were simultaneous and only units with the "first strike" ability could attack without chance for counterattack (I think Paladins and some other mounted units had this ability).

Bottom line is that MoM's combat system worked and scaled well. EWoM's does not.  I don't care if it's the same as MoM or not, but I agree with the poster who said they shouldn't reinvent the wheel if it wasn't broken to begin with.  Creating a completely new system that is much worse and does not scale at all was not a good idea.

I don't care how they got here.  I do care that they fix it.  This needs a lot more than tweaks, it needs a complete restructuring.

The strange thing is that GalCiv2 used the same system being suggested here. Why would they change it to uberpwn system when the old system was tried and true. As I recall, first strike was also available in that game.

Agree'd, the combat system is all but completely broken at the moment. I dont even do tactical combat anymore because of how broken first strike and AI stupidity make it. It consists almost entirely of waiting for the AI to charge into attack range, then smacking them down before they can retaliate. I can usually take out enemy ranged units with my own ranged units and a few spells. Combine this with the fact that movement is stupidly slow and unit control doesn't switch smoothly, and there is just no appeal in the tactical combat.

I strongly agree unis needs MORE HP - it is just too much randomness when a mighty hero is killed by a single arrow because he has so few HP and got unlucky once. More HP, and please less retaliatory attacks, which makes it even more necessary to build and then stack troops so that they kill the enemy on first strike. A melee fight should take a few rounds so that tension mounts - not like in Elemental where even your sovereign might die from a spider bite early game.
