I read somewhere here that map generation could be controlled via a check-box somewhere to tell the game to create maps with islands, or without. I've looked, and I don't see any button anywhere.
Is it possible to change what types of maps are generated in the game, if so, how?

As far as I know the option for island maps went away sometime during the beta.
In the instructions, under 'Create your world,' there is an option called Land Mass which allows you to change the config of the map. Guess they cut it, and didn't take it out of the inst.
They really should put it back in, or enable it. I tried creating a map that way with the tools, but even if you pick "Single Continent" you still get bunches of islands.
Sounds like something is borked to me.

The islands and multiple contintents type maps are not supported yet because the AI can't handle ship loading and boarding well, it can't organise invasion.
