Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 6

Rise of the Paladins

image

The Order of the Paladin was the result of the miracle at Hinern. The mighty Crusaders, armed with the best Capitar could offer, had fallen almost instantly in battle while the Channeler, Roland alone had brought low the mighty Emperor of Yithril.

A whole sale movement towards equipping soldiers with magical equipment had thus grown to fruition with the Order of the Paladin being the result.

The 23rd year of Roland’s reign..

image The Empire of Yithril had constructed Hinern in such a way to bottle up the fledgling Kingdom of Capitar [AI note: That’s right, the shape of your city does have strategic importance and the AI does and will make use of that].

The known world

image Umber a friend, but not an ally.

… Time

Passes…

image Roland’s second daughter, Kalypso had grown up.

imageAnd a powerful sorceress she would become.

image

imageResolve had also grown.

A break down of how it is researching so much

A Dance with Dragons

image So powerful had Roland’s daughter become that it was said that even the mighty dragons preferred her company.

But in truth, Roland, having mastered the art of diplomacy, had put great effort into seeking out and gaining the trust of the legendary creatures.

image [Developer’s note: We have since tweaked the defense of dragons to be somewhat higher]

Dragons are immensely powerful but one little known fact about them, they are expensive to keep fed. Over 6 gildars a month was spent feeding them.

And so it was with dragons and other creatures of might that Kalypso, the most powerful Channeler of her generation, marched to war to deal with the menace of Yithril once and for all.

You can see a quick video of the dragon and Kalypso approaching here:

And the battle:

imageOnly Kalypso would survive the battle.

image

“Perhaps,” Roland said to his daughter, “If we cannot defeat them on the battle field, we can starve them out.”

Strange, you were ranked at 666(not a good number in my book) and they were 387 and they won?  Is that a bug of some sort?  Thats almost double what they are, but perhaps the dragon was the most of it, and if the dragon died that would explain it.

It's only a bad number if you don't compliment it with Iron Maiden's, Number of the Beast }:) }:) }:) .

A bit concerned with performance (judging from that video) but I'll have to wait and see for myself.

Also I can't help but notice the portraits for the (enemy?) units. Half of them are positioned in that rigid-debug-mode sort of stance, with their arms out to their sides.

We will be the 23rd in 45mn here in France ! :P

I'm of the mind that if you can't beat something by sheer force, beat it by sheer numbers.

Statistically speaking, Capitar was superior to Yithril. But Yithril had more people fighting for them. So at the end of the day, while the dragon and assorted Capitarian soldiers were able to do some damage, they got paper-cut to death.

The fact that having a dragon and a few nice soldiers doesn't equal automatic win just shows - you can't play the game as a dance with numbers. There is so much more to take into account to win a war than just having the strongest soldiers.

I do wonder, though...does losing a dragon have any affect on the nation as a whole, aside from being a lost unit? I'd think that if you frequently lost powerful units, like dragons, would make recruiting them all the more difficult.

It would be cool if you could skin the Dragon's corpse and use it's hide to make armor }:)

QFT; Harvesting parts from the dead is beneficial, and enviromentally friendly!

I LOVE spells that change terrain in these kinda games (Age of Wonders. Shadow Magic fan for life, best 4x fantasy game in the history of the world imo, and still unbeaten, and still visually beautiful).

I mean, i really REALLY LOVE terrain change spells ;) *hint at what i want more of in future patches lol*
I also love how theres more than just 1 unit per square, it looks cooler than i thought, with small armies rather than just 8 huge soldiers.

Cant wait :) Time to play some Distant Worlds and Anno 1404 while you get off your butts and charge my credit card and gimme the game! X( :')

Are you sure you meant "QFT" there? Because it looked like you were agreeing with me, but last I knew "QFT" meant Quit F'king Talking :P

Now I know why the early release is running late: Brad is busy playing the game and not working!  haha  (Just joking)

It good to see that Kingdom grow and playing still very interesting.

I am unhappy (like thousands of other players i think) with delayed release in Russia and start to think preorder (or just buying) game on Impulse. It expensive and on english but ... but we must doing what we want, otherwise life seems to loose sense :-/

Anyway, good playing to all today :)

Don't read too much into the video performance - I seem to recall that whatever tool (FRAPS?) they're using is frame rate limited and ends up looking choppy. I've had battles in Beta 4 with those numbers of units and it's been fine (Core 2 Duo @ 3Ghz). I suppose there could be more eye candy in the final that has an impact on frame rates, but my guess is that it's the capture tool.

I've got a similar CPU as you (with my CPU being severely out of date compared to my Graphics card). I too never had much of an issue with the tactical battles. The main map however has always been extremely choppy and slow for me.

well i thought beta 4 was extremely choppy all the way around, just like beta 3, but I maybe not for the battles like you said. I dont remember and only played it for a bit.

argh, this is bull, the game doesn't even show up in my list anymore as if I never pre-ordered, i hope something didn't get screwed up...

Heh ... your forces were twice as powerful, yet you lost. I'd like to see the breakdown of the battle (as well as if they had extra help from city defenses)

cause otherwise, it seems like the "combat rating" could use some tweaking.

But yea, the first thing I may try to do is to make Dragons harder to get and more powerful :p

Elemental seems particularly well suited for AAR's.  I hope to read many of these as people start playing. :) Maybe there should be dedicated AAR forum like on the Galciv forums...

Nice read.

Archers were very powerful on the beta (no retaliations, can hit and fall back etc) seem like they still are.

What about having a limited number of shots (based on creature type/characteristics) per archer unit or group in battle, like in HOMM?  And maybe limited range (or penalty for longer range, like in H3)\?

What do people think?

Best regards,
Steven.
