How long until Elemental is "finished"

How long until Elemental is "finished"

Hello,

Please stay with me, this isn't meant to be a negative post... my question is:

when do you think Elemental will be "finished" and worth playing?

It seems clear that the release version 1.0 is not going to live up to expectations. Sure, it might be good, but it is clearly going to be a better, more rounded, balanced, interesting, deep game 6 months after release. I'm sure I read somewhat that the tactical combat system will be heavily overhauled in the first major patch, around 120 days after release (?). Similarly, with all the mod tools, I imagine the magic system and quests will become much more varied over time.

So, given i have very little free time (I'm still to start Fable2, Fallout3, only scratched the surface of FallfromHeaven2, etc etc etc) its clearly not worth playing Elemental in August. I'd be better off buying Starcraft2, or finishing a game I already own. :p

Also, if the game is going to be heavily dependant on user created content, will there be ways in which I can get the good, interesting, balanced quests, and avoid the crappy ones. Is somebody at startdock going to be collecting the good user created content and bundling some of it into the "definitive version"

I guess part of the reason for my mindset is that I bought CivIV on release, and played the hell out of it. I've gone back to it several times over the years, and the current Beyond The Sword patch gives a hugely better than than vanilla CivIV 1.0. But, guess which version of the CivIV I played the most... the early unbalanced ones.

Conversely, with GalCiv2, I was late to the party. Very late. I bought the game + expansions a couple of years back, and thought it was great. But, I'm glad I didn't "waste" much time playing the vanilla game, as the expansions added a lot and as the game was mature, it was pretty balanced.

I expect that the game will improve rapidly during the first 6 months... (balance patches, more content, etc) then things will level off as focus is switched to the expansion. Sound about right?

Well thought out reply. Adds a lot to the discussion and proves your point so succinctly. Thanks.

I appreciate the compliment.  Now will you help pull this knife out of my back? ;P

On a related note, I didn't realize the necromancer had cast his magic on this thread.

You can easily yank it out yourself by posting more than "24 August".

The thread was oddly prophetic.

rossanderson seems to think anyone who doesn't claim Elemental is the best game ever is a troll. Methinks he needs to hit the books and look up the definition of a troll. I must warn him that he may only find his own picture on that page!

Nah, we're just sick of seeing people who equate "I don't like the game" with "the game is unfinished" :P

I've piled on a lot of bad here so I think I should also mention what I do like. I love the art style. I love the idea of having this magic wielding guy as the head of your society of survivors. I do like the questing aspect of it to a degree. I'm not a huge fan of it but I don't hate it either. I think the game captures the feeling of living in a desolate post cataclysmic world well, I just don't think the mechanics behind rebuilding that world are fully fleshed out yet. I don't feel like I'm rebuilding a world and that makes me sad.

Actually I'd agree with your earlier synopsis. The city building aspect is fine, what's missing is the flavour. Magic doesn't feel integral to the game - it's not sufficiently powerful to make the sovereign feel all that special, nor is it distinct enough to feel like it's divided into separate schools. The troops and for that matter factions are a little too bland, I don't feel any difference between playing Tarth and Capitar, just a border colour. The units likewise aren't distinct enough, it's just guys with melee weapon/bow, a little more variety beyond the numbers would help there.

In short, I think the game is there. What it's lacking is a suitable world to be attached to.

I like the game and it is obviously unfinished, as you said, the world is not there (that is part of building a 4x game) among many other things that aren't there since we didn't get a Gameplay Beta (until now of course). Just poke through the threads of volunteers sifting through mounds of XML and finding things that simply were not done. The game wasn't finished at all.

Saying that doesn't mean I don't like it, it means I am disappointed with it especially given this companies outspopken stance on these issue for the last 2 years.

Elemental will never be finished.

As for when it'll be worth playing, I would say August 24th.

Can you be serious?

Just like we get YOUR message.  You don't like people repeating themselves at all but are doing the same yourself.

Apparently, you don't... judging by the extremely defensive fanboy response here and elsewhere.

people who complain about the "ingaming development" evidently don't remember what stardock announced some months ago... that...

THIS GAME WOULD BE DEVELOPED MAJORLY DURING OTHER PEOPLE GAMETIME AND REQUESTS

XD basically it's a HUGE experiment, they're spending lot of time trying to develop the game HEARING your suggestions...

proabably seeing this fifty fifty approvation NO ONE will try such a thing again XD

i'm excited as you all and i can't wait to play a better version... but... if this means time is required... patches released... mods created (maybe to have more original story also) DAMN I WILL WAIT EVEN A YEAR OR TWO è_é

and start to play some of this early patches to give suggestions as well :(

try to do the same!!!!

Yes, I am a troll. After all that is the *only* reason I could have to take issue with anything to do with Elemental.

I am off to cash my check from whatever organization that must be paying me.

Hasn't stopped the defenders from "crusading" against negative reviews, or anyone they disagree with. If you think this is a crusade, you need to cruise the internet a bit more. This is amazingly civil criticism.
