Frogman said no nickle-and-dime DLC. Real expansions only.
He's looking at the release schedule and seeing this:
Release: Elemental publicly available (WHEN IT'S READY)
- Single Player: Beta Tester Content (spells, quests, characters released based on player feedback).
- Multiplayer: Arena mode (remember Archon?).
- Multiplayer: The Kingdoms vs. The Empires.
- Single Player: Quest Pack (a thank you for buyers).
- Single Player: Monster Pack (a thank you for buyers).
Reading it myself, It seems to be indicating that there will be a pair of free "thank-you" packs for people who buy the game. This is keeping with Stardock's anti-piracy through added-value system.
Hey Sareln and SavageBananaMan34. Yea, that's where I read it.
Thanks for the feed back.
Sarein's reply makes sense.... thanks for clearing that up. I do remember Frogboy speaking against DLC's for this game but after reading the development timetable I was a little confused.
Thank goodness. I have absolutely no qualms about buying expansions, but I despise nickle-and-dime DLC for two reasons:
1) Expansions are usually well-rounded with content for everyone (mod tools are updated, maybe a new campaign, certainly new monsters, new multiplayer modes, etc). You buy it and you get lots of new content to play with. It's also easier to keep everyone on the same page.
2) Can you imagine how hard it would be to know if you could use a mod, when it would depend on which content packs you had (looking at you, Sims).
Plus, DLC packs just seem.... cheap to me. An expansion, I dig. DLC content, it really feels like the developers built the game to milk the people who want to expand the game.
So thanks, Stardock. ![]()
Stardock is well known for this with Gal Civ and especially GalCiv 2. They realease TONS of free new content (and did it long before "DLC" was thought of by the likes of EA and such) for a game. Not only as a thank you for buying the game but as an anti-piracy "DRM" so to speak. You make people want to buy the game by giving more and more cool and free content.
I will start a tree roots campaign (because a grass roots campaign can only go so high) to have at least one of the expansions give us floating cities, flying and tunneling abilities, and maybe even underground cities for mountains. There will be an official post when the game is released.
Thinking back on the way they did it with GalCivII, I guess those extra Monsters / Quests will be made available together with a patch.
Well you know, failing that, you could always mod that stuff in![]()
I have no time for such major modding. I would rather buy it. On the other hand part of the dance of such movements involves compromise. I expect that at lest some of these improvements are already being considered. The great thing about this kind of company is how responsive they are to gamer's special needs.
