Still a few beginner questions...

Just went through the manual to get some answers to questions i had and now i want to ask you for clarification

1. Ok, the pirates attack the one with the highest bounty on the nearest planet and get bounty for each unit destroyed. Understood. Will they stop at planets on their way to destroy units if they arrive at gravity lanes of parties that are not wanted but have bounty on their heads as well (but not the highest)? Or are they just defending and making their way through to the victim?

2. How long exactly is the time from "pirate raid imminent" to "launched"?

3. The black market. I do not understand the offer price button. What exactly does it do? Which are the excess ressources the manual talks about? How does changing the value in detail affect the player? If someone could explain it in detail i would be glad.

4. Research structures actually dont do anything besides unlocking new tiers of the research tree, do they? And they do not add up in a "research points" fashion, they just unlock new parts of the tree, am i right? There is no need in building more research structures if the skill wanted is already available for research (tier unlocked, marked by being not greyed out anymore). Per area of research ("Military", "Defense" e.g.) one research at the time can be done with some of other areas, even if it uses the same type of research structure? Research in the same area seem to be stacked till done. Any benefits of additional research structures, like faster research?

Sorry if any of the answers is obvious or explained in the manual and i did not see it, i only had a few games and are getting into the game yet. Especially the research thing seems to be confusing at first because factors like ressources also afflict the availability.

1. No stopping, they just go for their target

2. It varies between 30 seconds and 90 seconds

3. It doesn't really do anything that I have been able to see

4. Just unlocks tiers

Try the Distant Stars Mod when you feel ready, it adds a lot to the game

I'm writing this without the game in front of me, so forgive me if I use the wrong name for buttons, etc.

3. The offer price is only relevant to resources you put up for sale (NOT the quick sell option).  It sets the price that you've put those resources up for, as a percentage of the current market value.  Those resources will get sold slowly, and they're only taken if another player buys that resource off of the market.  As expected, they go quicker the lower you set the price. In other words:

  • If you need the money now, then quick sell the resources.  You only get 50% (?) of the market value for the crystal/metal, but you get it immediately.
  • If you can wait for the money (kinda rare, really), then put it up for sale, and set your price.  Again, depending on how quickly you want the money, decrease the offer price appropriately.  Definitely change the price though!  I don't think you sell anything if it's at 100% (why would the enemy buy from you, if it's not advantageous to them?).

I think most players just use the quick sell option. Time is fairly important in this game.

BTW, if someone who knows better determines I'm totally full of it, let me know.  This is just how I think it works based on my experience.

The offer price on the black market is a very powerful tool, but a lot of players don't use it.  As mentioned, if you just quick-sell metal or crystal, you get only 50% of the going rate.  However, you can also put metal and crystal on the black market and wait for an opponent to purchase it.  You can then specify your selling price (between 50-100% of the black market price) and receive potentially twice as much as if you just sold it in the short term.

If two people are putting their resources on the black market at the same time, the one that is offering the lower rates will get the sale.  However, in practice, if someone is regularly buying metal or crystal than you should have no problems getting away with 100% sale price.  I never sell for a penny less.

It should be noted that the buyer still pays 100% of the black market price, even if you're charging 60%.  That other 40% disappears into the ether and the black market steals it up as profit.

1. No they don't stop, but if your units get in there firing range they will attack while moving.

2. Not long, so if your going to increase the bounty, do it quick (and keep your eyes on the underground window).

3. See Darvin's post.

4. No they don't do anything, even though the manual says they do. Though if you make more labs past the 8 you need for more techs you are less vulnerable to having those labs destroyed and thus losing some of your technology.

While I appreciate anyone trying to help new players, is always advertising your mod necessary? Your user pics already do a good job whenever you post, and if the OP mentioned anything about mods it would be understandable, but these are clearly just questions about the original game.

Alternateively, was in necessary to shoot down said advertisement?  Not like he's forcing it on anyone...

Pirates will shoot at anything that gets in front of them on their way to their target, but they won't stop to engage, nor have I seen them use abilities in-transit.

You only NEED 8 of each research structure total, though I do recommend building 2 or so extras if you get the chance, so you don't lose researches due to losing research buildings.

The DS team worked hard on the mod, I'm sure, and it is very much Sins-related, so I don't see why his including links to it should offend anyone or be a problem.

I was not disputing that, it just seems they go rather out of the way to plug their own mod. In other forums I am apart of, such blatant self promotion is discouraged outside of areas specifically for such purposes. I assumed that consensus would be here as well.

There are certain conventions on forums, and shameless promotion that's off-topic is generally considered pretty low.  There are no rules against it on these boards, but GaoFan is correct that most people look down on this sort of thing.

I am interested in it...

If the mod is good, their work should be appreciated and its okay to point it out, i would not have recognized it only by looking at his avatar. Other forums give the option to use a signature.

I do not have a problem with this and if those that complain have mods as well they are invited to present it here as well for the sake of competition ;)

P.S.: I think i have to put the settings down a bit for this unitorgy ^^
