so... what is essence actually good for?

I am playing Beta 1G: Update 2... and I am really not sure what essence actually does.

I know it takes 5 of it to create a city on unclaimed land, and that my max mana = my essence. thats pretty much it. oh, and that i can bequeath it to others, and that I can only gain more on levelup...

anything else that it does? does it help in combat?

Once we get tactical combat in a later beta, we'll also be getting spells that can be used in combat (presumably).

I'd say that being able to rain fiery death on your enemies will help in combat, yes. :)

Esssence is your mana cap.

Ah, I already noticed it is the mana cap... but currently there are no combat spells so its not that useful. Yes I can see how it would matter a whole lot if I could lob magical nukes in combat.

Well, there is a charm monster spell in the air spellbok that requires 10 mana to be cast ...
