Problem with custom map.

Star display

Hey all.

I just tweaked and made a custom map with the in-game map builder. I made a map with 5 stars and 150 planets, with 10 factions. So far, everything looks good. Then when I save that map and fire it up through a New Game, I noticed something missing when I zoomed out to view the whole map.

The star clouds aren't there at all. The clouds that look like a galaxy around the star- it looks really nice. I loaded up a regular map (a default huge map with 5 stars), and the star clouds / galaxy are all there around the 5 stars. When I go back to my save game in the custom map, the star clouds are missing.

Does anyone know why? I'd like to have those star clouds around the stars in my custom maps.

Go to the effect options and there are two settings for star clouds (or in Sins speak Skyboxes). Use color skyboxes and use deep space skyboxes. We aren't really sure what the difference is, but having both of disables any skybox, and toggling the others on and off changes the skyboxes at each star. Thus you can just keep switching them on and off until you have the skybox desired.

Also, if you want to get into map making, the Galaxy Forge is probably a better tool for designing a map exactly how you want it (though initial skyboxes are picked at random when the game loads). However, it might take a pretty long time to make a map that big, so they both have their benefits.

I just found out.

On a hunch, I experiemented with map size, and I dragged it all the way to the left. I saved and then previewed my map. Presto! The stars have the nebulas around them and a galaxy-looking blob around them when viewing from the maximum zoomed out level.

I know about the clouds- the nebula-like color background, that wasn't what I was missing. It was the white blob around the star when viewed from a distance. Although I appreciate your help and step-by-step instruction for the skybox. :)
