(Undocced) rule for manner in which exp accrues to caps?

Just a quick question on an undocced feature / effect.

I noticed the other day that my capital ship arrived in a gravity well in which my fleet of miscellaneous were battling assorted other miscellaneous opponent ships and seemed to get exp for just watching the fight.  i.e. Just the one cap, in this scenario.  Entrenchment mod, latest patch.

While I clicked my cap to go attack, the battle was on the far side of the gravity well, and my cap never did make it over before the enemies were mopped up.   Yet the cap ship accumulated several hundred experience.  I know Alt circles can sometimes decieve by only showing the radius of the primary weapon, but even so, I'm rather doubtful the cap was causing any dps, much less killing several things.

So...there's a hidden rule that, I assume, says something like: Cap ships get exp for anyone killed while they're in the system in question?  (If so, a followup: Split evenly by N cap ships if there are N, one would assume?)

Just curious.  Slowly digging deeper into the game, noticing more and more finegrain, and I figured forum cultural/verbal lore would know this one.  Thx.

Bingo.

Yeah, you got it right.  Here's an old post that covers the same topic, and lists the amount of experience available from each item.

all caps in a grav well with a battle going on get exp. the amount is based on how many caps are in the same grav well at the time (plus certain research techs), regardless of if they actually do anything or just sit there looking pretty

so, one cap in a battle would get all the EXP, while 7 caps would each take a 1/7th share, again, regardless of if they're attacking or not.

sometimes to lvl up caps quickly and for free, you send them to your frontline worlds or UCGW's with starbases, set them to hold position and let the starbase mop up any enemies, while the caps get the EXP.

i once brought out two new carrier caps late game, and wanted to lvl them up. i sent them to an UNGW with a starbase with no hangar upgrades, and used the Carrier SC to manage incoming enemies

both caps levelled up to about lvl 4/5 before you can say jim's your uncle without even fighting that much =)
