EA to Shut Down Servers... Again

Yet another Reason Direct IP should be a requirement For All PC games

Electronic Arts announced that by Feb. 2 it will take away online play from several sports games released in 2008 or earlier, thus negating any real reason to keep playing them and pushing customers to buying newer releases.

Here's the list of hobbled games, as reported by IGN:

UEFA Champions League 07 PC and x360
Facebreaker x360 and PS3
Fantasy Football 09 x360 and PS3
FIFA 07 PSP, PS2, PC
Fight Night Round 3 PS2

I already hate EA for a lot of reasons, piss-poor download service (Actually requires you to pay to try and download your game again if it msses up), awful customer service, the greed machine tactics they use with their titles that do sell well and their continued show of contempt towards the consumers they should be greatful to even have.

Most of these are console titles, there are a few PCs thrown in the mix. And according to other speculators, maybe one of the reasons they opted not to use Xbox's servers and use their own was because they wanted to pull the plug this quickly.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these games, but there is a reason I haven't purchased a multiplayer game from EA since Battle for Middle Earth II (in addition to how bad titles since have been).

I don't think WAR will last too much longer either...actually, I'm kinda surprised it has managed to limp along this far.

He didn't include any MMO titles there. EA already has the lead in most released MMO titles shut down.

As bad as EA customer service and support is, they still manage to surprise me.  Cutting online support on Madden 09?  That game isn't even two years old.  Why would anyone buy another EA sports title knowing that you are now pretty much forced to buy the roster updates new versions every year if you play online?

Oh well, you can pick up last years versions for $2 at any used game store...

I have a lot of reason not to like EA, securom, destroying spore, their crappy download service, their microtrans, shutting down MMOs. I know companies are in it to make money, i really do. But if you I guess so long as a they pop out Dragon Age games, people will continue to support them no matter how anti-consumer they are.

This. I'm usually against the irrational hate people have for some companies, but EA should be charged with sexual abuse for what they did to Spore.
