Top 25 Games of the Decade [Results are In!]

Top 25 Games of the Decade [Results are In!]

With the end of the decade approaching, I've been seeing a lot of "Top _____ of the Decade" lists popping up. So I thought I would make my own, but instead of them just being based off of my own (very biased:P ) opinions, it should be everybody's opinions. So for the next 3ish weeks, everybody will be able to nominate whatever games they think are the best of the decade. I will put them all into a list here, and at the end of the 3 weeks, everyone will get to vote on what they think are the best. Voting will be open for 2 weeks, then I will post the results.

Rules:

  1. Game must have come out between January 1, 2000 and November 30, 2009. December 2009 will not be included, because it will be hard to determine how good the game is in only a week or two.
  2. Games can be on any platform/system. PC, Xbox360, PS3, Wii, Gamecube, DS, Xbox, PS2, etc, etc. Cross platform doesn't matter. Just make sure they came out this decade!
  3. Betas of games cannot be nominated (no Elemental, sorry:'( )
  4. Nominations will end at 12:00 AM Mountain Time December 19 (I want to use my own time zone, so sue me:P ) and voting will begin shortly after that.
  5. Voting will end 12:00 AM Mountain time January 1, at which point I will post the results.

Nominations are closed! Cast your votes for your favorite games of the decade here: http://surveys.polldaddy.com/s/7600F3F8F369957A/ You may only vote once, so make it count. When you vote, make sure only one game is ranked 1, one game is ranked 2, and so on.

No One Lives Forever

I already mentionned No One Lives Forever.

Its in my book the best game ever released, all platforms combined. Its that damn good...to bad very few people got to experience it when it was released way back in 2000.

Tribes: Vengence (Very unique fps)

HEATHEN! XO

Tribes: Vengeance was a fatal lobotomization of the franchise. It sacrificed much of the mod-friendliness, depth, and intelligent gameplay of its predecessors in exchange for brighter colors, a single-player campaign nobody cared about, and some sort of truck that looked suspiciously like a Warthog.

Tribes 2 was far better. If you haven't played it, (and you wouldn't have nominated Vengeance if you had) Sierra released the first two Tribes games as freeware back in 2004. Vivendi pulled the plug on the multiplayer authentication servers in 2008, but there's a fan-made patch to fix that.

/rant

Hey, I just noticed Tribes 2 was released in 2001! I'm going to nominate it.

I also notice that Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries was released in 2002. It definitely deserves a nomination, especially when you factor in all of the epic fan-made multiplayer expansions. (Mektek is still working on their fourth mech pack, and was recently asked by the Mechwarrior rightsholders to release an official freeware compilation of the base game + all their mods)

A few of my favorites that were not mentioned:

- Kohan series

- Starlancer

- Freelancer

- ANNO series

- Disciples 2

Yay Freelancer!   A buddy of mine programmed that; or at least a big part of it.    Although I haven't played it myself--don't tell him I said that, okay?   He's like a single guy, lives with his mom in his 4000 square foot half-million-dollar house.  We had Halo parties there.

There's not a lot of love for the PS3 in that list...yet!

Demon's Souls

A truly remarkable game.  It's an intense RPG, but all combat and exploration is based on difficult physical models.  So, if you want to swing the Bastard Sword, you -the player- need to learn to time it right, dodge and defend accordingly.  The game take place in five worlds with complex, platform game styled levels.  They are all completely different looking and playing.  Don't be put off by the high difficulty level of the game.  The game demands a lot out of players but pays them back with fantastic experiences and many moments of great triumph.  It also has a totally unique take on network play.

Little Big Planet

A great Sony exclusive.  It's a great family game, but it's also a really robust game creation engine that has pretty much every aspect seen in a physics-based game at your disposal.

Katamari Damacy

It's not Sony exclusive anymore, and it's just a blast with a cheerfully weird sense of humor.  My kid learned how to read by matching the words with the items he rolled over, and it's not even billed as edutainment.  It's also a fun look at Japanese culture.  The gameplay remains unique too.

Here are my reasons for prefering Vengeance over Tribes2

1. My wireless internet setup is too slow to play multiplayer fps and tps games like tribes2

2. I do not enjoy competitive gaming at all, infact multiplayer is my least favorite gaming experience and I generally avoid it at all costs. Lets just say, I probably won't play Elemental Online at all.

3. The campaign for Tribes was simply amazing. It reminded me of a J.R.R. Tolkien/Frank Herbert story telling hybrid, which I enjoyed thoroughly.

I can see how Tribes 2 might not do much for you if you don't like multiplayer. I must admit that I've never actually played the Vengeance single-player campaign; single-player FPS doesn't interest me, and the Tribes franchise was so multiplayer-focused that I couldn't imagine it working very well. They did have an interesting backstory, though.

I still think Vengeance was a poor game, but at least you got to enjoy the franchise. It certainly is unique.

There is only 1 cool gameplay element in Spore: the creature creator. It would be cool to have something similar in Elemental, but ah well. :)

It looks like the 4X/RTS playing public on this forum are not big sports fans.

I just have to nominate the one game that ate up more hours and created many scenarios in my head and that is Championship Manager 2001/02 - no other sports manager game as got close since. Don't think it will get many if any votes here though.

Have you played the second one? I thought it was far and away the better game of the two. Am I missing something? :maybe:

Also, are expansion packs really counting as different games? I don't want say Rise of Nations vote split between people who give credit to the original game and people who say overall Thrones and Patriots is a better experience. More than likely everyone voting for it has played both and doesn't really care which one wins. Also there are a couple other games with similiar problems up there as well.

Yes, but space battles became boring around the fifth time, and they removed some of my favorite maps and weapons (orbital strikes, they messed up Geonosis so badly), but it just wasn't as satisfying. The first was my first EVER Xbox game, and nothing wowed me the on the first playthrough as Battlefront did. I still play it today, almost five years later.

No, they aren't. Expansions get grouped with the original, unless it is a stand-alone expansion (SupCom FA) If there are games with problems up there, it's because I've never actually played the game, and didn't know it was an expansion:P If you want to tell me which ones have problems, I'll fix it.
