Does ANYONE like MOO3 better than GalCiv?

And is anyone as disappointed in MOO3 as I was?

Patched, MoO3 is a playable game. GalCiv is cleaner though, a little too clean for my taste, so it depends on whether or not I want to sink into the details or supervise things at a high level.

The GalCiv AI is still better than the patched MoO3 AI, though.

Oops, should be more specific. With the *CODE* patch, MoO3 is playable, the data patch helped, but not nearly enough.

After going back to moo3, I have noticed that I really like being able to design my own ships.

Yes, the custom ship design was one of the nicer features of the MOO series. But it certainly didn't compensate enough ...

The funny thing for me is that I would never have known about GalCiv if I hadn't bought a copy of MOO3 and saw the marketing glossy ad for GalCiv right there in the package. After being quickly disgusted with MOO3, I decided to give GalCiv a try. Boy am I glad I did ...

Also been disappointed by MOO III until code patch release. But IMHO, GalCiv is way more SP fun.But I really miss those tactical combats and the ship design feature :( .Anyway, nice to see another Dark Elf Ranger around :HOT: ;) .

Like I said in another thread, I wouldn't mind seeing a simplified ship design system for GalCiv II, but frankly MoO3 tactical combat is the worst of all worlds. You can zoom in far enough that you can see more than points of light, or you can zoom out far enough to give orders effectively. Never mind the fact that you can't tell what you're shooting at for the most part. Even a pause button would be a significant improvement.

MOO 3 equals Master of Orion 3. It is the sequel in a once proud lineage, MOO 1 is an unforgetable classic for people who were playing it in its day. MOO 2 was pretty revolutionary and broke a lot of new ground. MOO 3 seems to have been rushed out the door by developers who are very slow to respond to the numerous flaws that the customers were talking about.

There is a vastly different perception the average gamer gets from both developers. MOO 3 gave me the impression that the folks behind it wanted to take the money and run, while giving as little as possible back to the customers who bought an obviously incomplete product. Galciv showed me people who really wanted to make a good game and prove it every day. Sure, the beta releases sometimes are a little tricky, but the official patches are always an improvement. Even those tricky beta patches are repaired quickly. It is a totally different attitude between the two games.

Thanks . . . From what I could find on the web (not having played it offcourse) it looks 'ok' I guess (and thier forums are a bit more tidy appearence wise -take no offence pls-) but the ingame layout looks yukie! Although the background looks solid enough (story wise) I suppose. Perusing thier boards I was suprized to find alota bug posts, I mean, considering it's the 3rd installment of the Grave Train.

What?? MOO3 rushed out the door? Wasn't it in development for 3-4 years??? I followed the MOO3 website for over a year, in anticipation of a great game, and was extremely disappointed. Spreadsheet after spreadsheet. I returned MOO3 and got GalCiv. Much better, in my opinion. I especially am having a lot of fun with customizing colonial and random events, anomalies, and UP scenarios.

Yes, it has been in development for a very long time, but sometime last year ( march, I think ) , they decided to cut away a lot of features and redesign the rest, so the whole thing got very..well, inconsistent, if you know what I mean. They got really confused after the re-design, according to some interviews, so one could call that a rushed-out product. - But I like the combat engine when I use that "double ship size" trick and the gofur UI mod. Anyone tried that out? That game can look very ah...polished after all.

Bobo say Cotel in cellar longtime more than Bobo!

Bobo say Moo3 vs GalCiv "who like Better" talk on threads before. many times. now come back. Is both good games now. That not mean allkinds people like both games. Some like GalCiv, think Moo stinky. Some like Moo, think GalCiv stinky. Both right. Both wrong.
Both games different from each other. Bobo like both. Not all think same as Bobo. That ok. Not have to all think same way. That for ants and bees.
Bobo play now.

Well, well.
A Dark Elf asking a question... ;)

Anyways, I tried MOO3 for 2 weeks, sent it back to the store and used the store credit to buy GalCiv. :HOT:

I actually like Moo3 post code patch for one set of reasons while I like Gal Civ for a variety of other reasons. It really depends on what mood I am at the moment.

Moo3 pros: backstory, ship design, complexity, graphics (except for combats), special situations (guardians, New Orions, the Harvesters)

Moo3 cons: AI castrated (has improved), space combat, UI a bit on the clunky side, LOOOOOOOOONG patch cycles

Gal Civ pros: AI (I find faults here and there, but its still good as a whole), diplomacy (viable here), much more rapid bug fixes and support, generally tidy UI

Gal Civ cons: Memory leaks, very long load times on large maps, sound effects seem cheesy

Overall Gal Civ is a better game than Moo3 in many areas, but I like the two as I said for differing reasons, though I've played this game through much more than moo3

The MOO 3 patch helps. But what it does is show that the basic game itself is flawed. MOO 3 is a bad game that is designed to keep you so busy managing the details so that you don't notice that the overall game is bad.

GalCiv is less ambitious than MOO 3 but it succeeds at what it's trying to do much better.

GalCiv has much superior re-playability and a much better sense of accomplishment.

I kept the Moo3 CDs for the time when it was patched... when the code patch finally came out I just deleted the game without ever trying the new stuff.

It's sad, 'cause if it wasn't for the Moo3 forums I would never have heard of Galciv probably.

I'm glad both games came out at the same time... I was really itching for a good TBS, and after being heartbroken with moo3....

Besides, I've replaced the Carinoids with the Elerian graphics.

the moo3 forum is like a police state. you have gestapo-like moderators there enforcing "correct thinking".

i loaded up the patch to moo 3 and played it and it is better but many other things were not fixed. the tactical combat is still a total waste of time fi. but the moo 3 forums are so rabid in fanboys with ocp and mods who are more interested in creating personal cults that i don't feel like i can make suggestions. and even if that hurdle was cleared theres the feeling that the devs there don't care.

i think if moo 3 had reached its designed goals it would be as good or possibly better htan galciv. but it falls so short of its own goals that it pales in comparison with galciv.

and here you can post an idea. there's no moderators here, there doesn't seem to be a need for them. everyone seems nice. even the critics are pretty nice. and ideas seem to get into the game.

Bobo think all have good points. All have sayback worth reading. Bobo also say allkinds people only speak opinions. No game better than other game. Only in people opinions one game better than other. Not making difference if talking Gal vs Moo or Unreal vs RTS. No matter. Everybody like different things. All ok. Bobo not mind if him like Moo and Gal but somekinds people say Moo or Gal stinky game. Bobo know them REALLY mean game not good for THEM. Bobo know that even if allkinds people do not. Happy thinking keeps Bobo not being angry. Mad Bobo not good thing. Bobo only get mad now when losing in game playing. Bobo mad muchtimes lately.

I just cannot get past how ugly MOO3 is, and inctredibly unintuitive. After 12 hours of trying to like it last week I took it back. Gal Civ is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better. Only thing it's missing is customizable ships.
