I want to preorder and beta test, but I use XP 64

After the agony of cleaning up after the failed uninstall of Impulse I am gunshy

So, I was very excited to get in on beta-testing and development of Elemental, I set up Impulse, and it just plain crashed every time I tried to get to ordering the game.

A bunch of hair-pulling and a tech support exchange later, I find out that Impulse doesn't work on XP 64. So I uninstall it, and the uninstaller is so broken that I am left with an error message coming up every few minutes and a process I have to manually kill in order to get rid of the executable.

With Stardock's long reputation for tweaking Windows behaviors and quality software, I am seriously taken aback by this horrible experience. My confidence in the company is quite shaken.

But MoM is still one of only two computer games my wife enjoys playing, and our enthusiasm for a potential worthy successor is not entirely gone. We're willing to give it a try - if we can actually download and play it. After the debacle with Impulse, I am very leery of sending in money without a direct assurance that the game will work on XP64 when downloaded via Impulse Anywhere, and that preordering will really let us participate in the beta test and final tuning.

Dont know about it working on XP64 at the beggining, but i think SD is trying to make it work on everykind of system so if it doesnt they would probably want people with XP64 systems in order to work out compatability issues. and if you pre-order you will get access to the beta when its available, which is currently around PAX which is i think sep. 6-8.

I've been using Impulse on XP64 from just after the start. Besides some problems that a / some games didn't want to install on XP64 because it wasn't recognized / supported (which was solved pretty quickly) I haven't had any problem running impulse, ordering games and downloading / installing those games.

So I can't really understand that tech support told you it doesn't work on XP64, as it does for me. Are you sure you've installed all the latest patches? If I remember correctly, .NET 3.5 (or whatever version is the latest) is needed for Impulse to work, even on normal XP. So, if you haven't installed that one, maybe it's something to try out...

There was a post in which a SD employee said it would work in 64 bit... not sure of the details though...

That was Vista/Win7. XP 64 isn't usually officially supported because it was never actually meant for non-business use and is such a tiny group of people.

I'm pretty sure SD isn't going to provide support for 64-bit XP based on their responses eleswhere (and thus why they don't list it as a valid OS).  Microsoft themselves barely acknowledges its existence.  It will probably be a case where, if it works, great.  If it doesn't, sorry.  At least with Windows 7 out you now have a really great 64-bit option, although 64-bit Vista is pretty good.

I'll try and get an internal build testing on XP64 and get back with you....several of us are developing on Vista64 (which works like a champ) so unless it requires a 64 bit version of a app to run, we should be good!

So still no native 64-bit build?   too bad.

Maybe they can't do a 64-bit native build because they depend on libraries that are 32-bits only.

Is it such a problem to have 2 partitions with different windows, like..almsot everybody does? Why did you even open this topic?

Bizarre...

In the past they've said that Havok hasn't put out a 64 bit version yet, and that's what is holding up the 64 bit Elemental.

Windows Vista/7 64 bit is supported. It's Windows XP 64 bit that isn't. :)

they said that the reason they couldn't do a 64-bit vative version yet is because of dependancies on havok physics, which have not yet released a 64-bit version.

I was hoping somewhere they would have found a work around (commenting out any code that might call for something from havok, for example)
