Diplomatically Hampered

The current diplomacy system actually is hampering the way I play a bit. I'd turn on locked teams, but I want this to be more of the empire building game that was intended than the war game that we have. Any ideas on how to work around the current system or how to bide my time until the expansion is out?

I just picked up Galactic Civilzations II (also by Stardock).  It's definately more in of a diplomacy-heavy game than Sins is.  I'd suggest taking a look at it.

Other than that or another game, I'm not sure what to tell you.  I'm quite looking forward to the next expansion as well.

I'd say bide your time until the expansion is out.  The AI's behavior in unlocked teams is just annoying adn there's no way around it, and in multiplayer people just form 3v1 scenarios because there only needs to be one loser in unlocked teams.

Sins is a real-time-strategy game (RTS) as opposed to a turn-based-strategy game (TBS).  There's not too much that can be done to change its nature.

However, that doesn't mean that it isn't a great game.  For the best Sins experience I recommend playing 5v5 pug matches (where two captains pick the teams, resulting in balanced teams) in online multiplayer.  No worries about facing a 3-on-1 since you have allies and if you are facing that, it means that the rest of your team gets to play 4 on 2.

Actually, CenturionJixra, Sins is supposed to be a TBS in real time, not completely focused on war (although the story does lend itself to be moreso that). Which is why the diplomacy controls are frustrating. I was actually wondering if any of you know a mod that would work around this.

Course not, but I wouldn't advise playing on unlocked teams, whether single or multiplayer.

The game's diplomacy system simply isn't working currently.

Unlocked teams (especially with multiple hard or unfair AIs) is usually an exercise in frustration, it ends up in a stalemate with the AI attacking on multiple threats and not allowing time for a counterattack before the next wave...

A beefier diplomacy system would be nice, but i doubt the AI would know how to use it since it hasn't even figured out the combat yet
