Good Idea?

Hey Everyone,

Skip this if your not interested in back story:

First I thought I would introduce myself a little. I have been following these forums for over a month now and am very excited about this game. I have always enjoyed GalCiv 1 & 2, civ 4 and other stratergy games. So I have pre ordered and counting down the days to release day.

Now I dont have anything to play at the moment so I'm constantly switching between DemiGod, Dota and L4D. I'm finding that I'm not playing dota as much, not because of its dated graphics, but because there is no Achievement system!

I can play all day and there is no record that I have even touched the game. L4D tracks my time played and I can go for new achievements, DemiGod tracks game stats and now started tracking achievements aswell.

Now I was playing WoW :puke: when they released the achievement system, and i thought to myself, what a stupid way to waste your time. However once it was released I found it to be just not bad but actually quite fun if you were in the mood for it.

Start reading from here.

So back to Elemental, I think there should be an (online) achievement system, sorry if this has been suggested I couldn't find it.

Example achievements could be:

  • Play a 1v1 against a nightmare AI.
  • Play through a game and never use a spell from your channerler.
  • Never let your trade routes get attacked.
  • Never loose one of your towns.
  • Have over 100 bear calvalry in a single game.

I think that they could be added as the game progresses. Possibly even mod-specific ones. Just an idea to pro-long the enjoyment of the game.

Scoutdog, you don't know the meaning of the word forced. Your OCD is not my problem.

If it gives you a bonus, sure you can ignore it.... but at your own peril. Remember, people: players want to WIN.

If the achievment is hard, like his example of completing the game on hard with only fire, you've already won the game more than once, so winning no longer comes into it :)

But still, it's limited to SP so it won't grow your e-peen to get them. Make the achievment unlock some new uniforms/looks for your army, cities, spells etc. and you can let achievments carry over from SP to MP and vica versa. Besides then it ain't forced the same way, unless you're a collector of achievments that is :)

Except those of us who just like playing. This game is supposed to be a TBS-RPG fusion, so hopefully it will expand on the variety of ways to end a game that GC2 has and eliminate GC2's profound bias towards total conquest of the map.

If I don't have fun, why should I bother to win? Do I get money or something? A free house? A girlfriend? Demigod status? I try to leave the boring things for my job or when a friend needs help with something unpleasant. The rest I try to have fun. :P (If I can have fun and win, I don't mind it, eh?)

Winning is fun..... chasing down achievements to max stuff out is NOT fun....

I've no problem with achievements. Gives something to do. I also have no problem with gameplay changing ones as long as they stay single player or some form of co-op. Mass Effect did them well, imo.

chasing down achievements to max stuff out is NOT fun...
Then don't.

I think the idea behind achievements is that they take the devs almost no time to add (compared to any other feature), and the people who like achievements like achievements.  Peaplo who don't like achievements are not going to have their normal gameplay hurt, so there isn't really a sacrifice to add it.   And failing to have achievements could get you knocked down a fraction of a point from some reviewers.   For something so easy to put in, there is no sense in skipping it.

Its like kitkun says... if you don't like them... don't pay attention to them.

Quoting KellenDunk, reply 8Am I the only person who has never liked achievements?  I thought they were a dumb idea when they first started appearing.  I always felt the goals of a game should be part of the game, not some artificial list of tasks..
I'm with you.
Me too.

I completely agree with you as long as they don't restrict content as achievement awards. If people enjoy collecting achievements, then they can have their fun doing so. But the moment you reward them, you are withholding content from the people who don't want to bother killing 15000 units with fireball in one game.

Yep tying content to achievements would suck. But making it so your channelers eyes glow and crap like that would be fun, and other ways to pimp out your chaneller's appearance, stuff like that would be very cool.

I'm opposed to even that. I hate going for achievements, but I want to be able to make my channelers eyes glow and crap like that. If I buy the game, I should have access to all of its content without having to actively pursue achievements, many (usually most) of which require me to intentionally play in a manner that is less enjoyable to me. The only type of content limitation that I like are levels and on occasion difficulty levels (like in Diablo or Titan's Quest). The former because there is a natural progression, and the latter because it essentially elongates the game, particularly if done well.

But honestly, why should someone who went out of his way to kill 15000 units with a fireball in one game get to make his channelers' eyes glow but not me? Do they deserve it? It's not like they did something productive or altruistic. People who enjoy achievements will enjoy them anyways even if they don't actually get you anything and people who don't like them can ignore them. On the other hand, if you actually get something (even if it's just eye-candy), then people who like achievements will like them more, but people who don't like them will be bitter - and if there are many other people like me then they'll go for the achievements that give rewards they want, but lose interest in the game sooner as a result.

Well, knowing SD, the acchievements will be moddable, as will the eyecandy, so you could very easily remove the requirements. If they do get included, I would be happy to do that for you personally in one day.

That might be all well and good, but what about the possibly-vast number of Elemental owners who will have no interest in cluttering their installation with mods?

I'm basically in agreement with pigeon here about in-game 'rewards' for 'achievements.' Even though I've enjoyed GC2 since its launch, my only real interest in mods so far has been in reading about them on the boards. If I end up in a similar 'player type' for Elemental, why should I be forced to jump through hoops just to get some eye candy?

Well, I'd make the thing public and VERY easy to install, but the achievements have to have SOMETHING at the end.... maybe not "eyecandy" in the sense of GC2 ship parts, but maybe a few extra bands on people's sleeves and pretty gold sowrds......
