For those who have problems with DosBox

Here's MoM for Windows

This developer is redoing Master of Magic for windows, Ver .06 is out, they're also adding multiplayer.  Haven't tried it much.  Of course if you're find with DosBox MoM can be found at tons of abandonware sites.

Also if you don't know what the game is I suggest, most strongly, that you give it a try.  I'll look around for an online manual too.

Don't we actually have the developer around here somewhere? He made a dedicated thread, at least to map generation, I'm sure.

And here's MoM:

With 1.3 patch (In the extras section).

EDIT- Here's manual - http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.641

we'll see.   I've heard people say they are going to remake it before.  Or at least port it to be playable under other operating systems.  I've yet to actually see it be done with any consistant playability (i.e. actually plays through an entire game without crashing, without lacking significant parts of the UI)

I just played 3 hours on DosBox anyway (With 1.3 patch), fine except I'm losing :-(, it's been a while...need sleep now.

That was me.  Different project.  I only have map generation and player creation done.

Lol, just on normal.  But I set large landmass and got put on a tiny island.  Only big enough for my starting city- and two VERY hard places to crack (couldn't do it till I had a large powerful army) for mana, etc.  When I finally grabbed another island I forgot about roving bands and my first city on the new island got destroyed.  So I sent an army over there and took it back/rebuilt and then built another city on that island and it got destroyed quickly by a roving band of phantom soldiers.  Also my only tower to the other plane was blocked by really hard monsters.

My main city is protected by a full stack of wyvern riders and is dopplegangered with a couple shadow demon's on the other plane but my expansion has been stalled pretty hard.

Wow on normal you say? lol I always play on hard or impossible with max AI players. I find that using a small map really increases the challenge level as well and make a house rule I can't use max death or life magics. Only 3 max if I use them since really Death is so powerful I don't see how anyone could lose playing it. Sorcery 'counter magic' spell is pretty overpowered as well. Plus Blue Skydrakes are the killer unit of choice. Channeling makes for a pretty easy game as well. I think that's the one where you can turn gold into mana 1:1, most games that's what I'm usually needing most is mana and that Channeling skill really makes it easy to get mana cause I always have an abundance of gold.

I hope that Stardock will really look at some of these attribute or enhancements players get to choose at the beginning of the game in games like MOM and AOW. Some of them are waaaaaaaaaaaaay overpowered like the Channeling one and the economy one. It's sort of like being able to build faster traveling colony ships in GC2 by giving up commerce or being able to speak to the aliens when you are setting up a game. I think they did curb this somewhat as I was able to get to impulse engines with hardly any effort and made it easy to rush colonize ahead of the AI.

I'm almost of an opinion that there shouldn't be any EXTRA choices that give advantages throughout the game when setting up a character. Something semi-permanent might be ok, a weapon, one extra spell, only 100 initial extra mana or something along those lines. Unlimited swapping of gold for mana or vice versa is just too easy to exploit the game and the AI. Or that other one where all your units will eventualy become maxed out warmongers 1 step earlier. Getting experience just sitting in a town/castle should be eliminated as well. MOM was noterious for this you just build units leave them setting in towns/castles and they gained maxium levels over time. booooo lol

On another note if they are going to implement these powerful attributes/enhancements allow US to create or give the AI these advantages over prebuilt models. This is what I love about GC2 and it's expansions. I can really modify the initial creation and difficulty of each individual AI. I really hope this is added in this game.

I'm sorta opposite, I think there should be tons of choices at the channeler creation process.

EDIT - as for the normal challenge, etc- Haven't played the game for like 10+ years so getting back into the hang.

Here's another guy working on it:

http://www.roughseas.ca/momime/

He was doing great, sadly as with many of this porject RL and other intrest have brought it to a standstill at the moment.

Still DOSbox really is worth figuring out if you get a front like D-Fend Reloaded or so, everyone should be able to do it with a bit of trial and error. Its worth the trouble for sure!

I still fire up MoM from time to time, its still great but I'm very happy that we'll get a new great turnbased fanatasy game to go along with it. Elemental coupled with the Modabilty should satify my fantasy strategy gaming needs for a long time to come!
