New Mod Star Trek Vs. Star Wars

Brand new mod

http://rapidshare.com/users/H9VZFH

A brand new mod just came out called Star Trek Vs. Star Wars. This mod is only compatible with TA. It replaces all major and minor races and each race has its own unique ship style, Tech Tree and Planetary Improvements. This mod focuses on conquest victory so you start the game with most of the techs enabled. This mod includes components already made from kryo, AF_Ronin, and Master U.

You Can Download it and other mod related links by Clicking Here

Here is a screen shot:

To install it, just unzip everything to the following directory:

Please let me know what you think of this mod. Thanks.

I do not permit redistribution of my own mod as parts of others for a variety of reasons, unless I've personally made an exception. This is explicitly stated in the KHSM readme file, and you have ignored it.

But worse than that, you've included components from a wide variety of mods that a lot of people worked very hard to make, with no credit given and most likely no permission asked. You cannot automatically assume that any mod is fair game for recycling; unless the documentation specifically releases the work for any reuse, you are obligated to ask permission first, and include both that permission notice and due credit in the compilation mod itself.

Adding even more on top of this, you've also included duplicates of many of the game's base models, which are not to be redistrbuted, period.

Kryo, then i'd some of that permission magic clearly written up in that thread too.

Out of simple curiosity, i gambled 7 minutes worth of Rapidshare limitations graciously reserved for Non-Premium downloaders of THAT file.

I concer, it's a strange compilation of a few previous mods available elsewhere. Renaming of files, resets of models, whatever.

It was fast enough to lay claim on some KHSM extras too (have a closer look at two sample X-Com ships in the "Show off your designs" thread if you must), much of it being straight out copies of Kryo's mod. Without permissions it seems and not even a proper readme.txt to explain why or how.

The cardassian fleet is even similar to what i glimpsed over when the Ultimate Sci-Fi mod was distributed by Renfl & gang @han891.com, and which i kept just in case some players would some day require it -- as you may know their site has been wrecked too. Oooooppppsss, I-Mod-Productions.com is **again** offline, btw.

Coruscant.raw, nice planet also.

So... Jordo21 - was it fun, at least?

If anyone has any suggestions to make this mod better please let me know. Thanks.

I'd recommend excuses below and maybe somebody else will bother trying to find some minimal honesty in your next versions typed or self-designed.

This is hilarious.

Version 6.0 was just released. This version includes a new intro movie and new ships for Klingons and Romulans.

And I do believe in giving credit to people. So this mod would not be made without the hard work that was done by:

kryo
AF_Ronin
Master U
Aggie_John
The Star Trek Mod Team

Hope you all enjoy it. In fact that is why everyone makes mods, is for the public to enjoy it. I don't claim to design this mod, I just helped bring it together. If anyone can lay claim to a mod, it would be Stardock, since everything is based off their game engine.

Fair & square. THAT makes it all official, close to some illegality and yet only from variable interpretations of the Law.

You should warn people that it's still growing beyond a 100MBs 210MBs zip, though.

A mod is the property of its creator, so you have no right to STEAL all these peoples' property!

True, also... in fact, some of that creativity is either shared with players or within the scope provided by *HOW* the gameplay was designed by Stardock.

By this, i mean - they allow modders to alter some features on the premise that it might enhance their product value and that it all stays inside reasonable "limits" - assuming no Copyright infrigment is involved.

Ever heard the term "Foxed"?

The filming corporation would sue all azimuths for anything nearly ressembling what they had on distribution (Lucas' Star Wars, being just one of many more, btw) -- in the end, they realized the activity was beyond legal actions that enriched only Lawyers.

The whole gaming industry can protect its assets, given.

But try to pay for a minute of publicity during the SuperBowl - and you'll understand what sort of indirect business boost a single MOD (of both quality & popularity) can mean to "longevity" of a title.

Property is also hard to prove if only from derivation than from outright "copying".

Jordo21 plagiarized and yet, who hasn't. X-Worlds included, btw. Could Mythos or Microprose sue me for using X-Coms? I doubt it, cuz whomever still has those rights (if any, btw) will be thankful that the franchise remained somehow popular for all these years since the originals were created.

Even in your own BoL, there's got to be source material.

You can't mod a mod!!! (you can't triple stamp a double stamp Lloyd)

How dare you LOL.

Seriously though, those who make mods do NOT own the mod, you can NOT sell the mod for profit, since it takes the original game to play said mod. Especially, if you use copyrighted pictures like that of Captain Picard... do modders really think that is 'their' property? The developers of the game actually own your mod. So I find it funny, hilarious, when modders try to make claims to their mods, when their mod would not exist if they the game wasn't made in the first place.

jordo21 - I personally wouldn't have asked for permission or given credit. I would expect the same if I had a mod... since I released it to the public it is now theirs to do as they see fit. These high horse riding modders think they own the hardwork they put into creating their mods, while everyone should respect the hardwork they have done, they still do NOT own any materials, scripts, code or otherwise that is used in conjunction with the retail product it was created for.

They do?

What if the retail product is FLAWED and must be altered to become reasonably playable for themselves?

Should all of this work remain in the dark shadows of a badly designed gameplay?

The various consequences of modding go beyond needs or features. When the coders of GC2 hands me a true sequencer of surface tiles that match Query Images with Terrain text strings, i'll still keep on searching for the next weird element that bugs me.

As modders, we do NOT own the process nor the results -- but, we certainly add value for anyone willing to dump our files into game folders GIVEN by the code; it's an invitation by SD staff.

We choose to respond. Respect that line of thought or keep scratching your heads with irrational concepts such as defense components on ships that all look alike unless MODDED by tagged thumbnails.

Yes Zyxpsilon, modders DO indeed add tremendous value!

I wasn't suggesting otherwise, my only point was that kyro was claiming ownership on their mod, when there is no actually ownership of property in the situation of modding. Like how I sarcastically stated, 'You can't Mod a Mod.' Well why not? That seems to be anti-conductive of the purpose of mod, which is to change, make better or add new elements to the retail version of game. So modding a mod is the same thing, if developers like SD encourage, allow and provide assistance for modding, which modders apperciate right? Then how can a modders then try and make claim and ownership of NOT modding their mod, when they were given the go-ahead by the developers of the game to begin with. Seems contradictive and hypocritical to me.

I am a bit unsure of the lagality of the following scenario, and since this thread is already about copyrights, maybe I can get an answer from Kryo or whoever controls Stardock's mod copyright policy: Nintendo releases downloadale graphics (IM icons, desktop bkgs, et cetra) to promote a new (well, actually it's relatively old by now) game. I take the images, photoshop them a little, mix them in with screenshots and music from other Nintendo games, and use them in a mod. Is this allowed?

I seriously do not bother with these "contradictions"... but i take great care into NOT stealing copyright stuff unless it is absolutely essential while being modded soooooo much it stops being considered original or property.

Sure, Kryo has expressed his opinion - even i can't deny the tricky concept that an image of Picard re-used in bazillions of Mods seem a bit overwhelming. It's the price of popularity, after all.

When i made CoSH, i had obvious "actors" images to represent Super-Heroes... but, i needed a telescope to read the tiny characters that prevented anyone from uploading such stuff. StarDock wants to protect itself from "Cease & Desist" court orders from Paramount? I'd say they'd *also* be chasing the wrong rabbit.

It's not a matter of creative control either since i can PROVE without a single shred of a doubt that GC2 is in itself full of references TO other concepts.

Universal knowledge is distributed to the masses for profit. I don't see why modders can't enjoy a similar privilege when there is NO personal profits involved other than a reputation for adding value to the product.

I don't get paid, i do it for *myself* and others.

The paradox is of interpretation and not of obligations sustained by *ANY* laws.

Go ahead and sue me, and i'll pit my successful college education in programming skills debts from the mid 80's against not being hired by anybody in the Software industry (Ubisoft & SoftImage just to name TWO!) for years on end.

Is this allowed?

Yes. And i really don't care who says otherwise - for a very simple reason; **EXTENSIVE EDITING**.

Hey, Wow it seems like this mod has caused a debate. Well I just wanted everyone to know that a great video editor known as TheGreatLink has contributed a more extended intro movie for this mod.

You can download the Extended version intro along with other stuff for this mod at:

Be warned though its about 10 minutes in length and the file is split into 2 parts also.

Ello jordo,

I just grabbed the mod to check out and it's really fun.  I never checked out any of the others so it was all new to me.

Hey Mr Nice Guy,

Im glad you like it. Thank you. I guess you really are a nice guy.

lol, you bet.

By the way, one problem I'm seeing is I can't build marketplaces when the game starts.  Inspired by your mod/collection, I'm trying to learn some tech tree modding and it seems tied to the races "History of Extremes" (neutral, ruthless) not showing up with the mod.

Thanks jordo.

Success!

Seems the borg tech tree was missing the entry for the neutral history and some other things.  I've started revamping it to be more Korath/Drengin based and I've got it working so far.  Really I just replaced the tech tree with the Korath and went back and added the Borg unique stuff.  I've also changed some of the flavor text to match.

Next I'm trying to change the names and descriptions of some of the buildings.  I found out how to do that with the planetimprovements.xml but it seems to add buildings and not replace them.  I'll try to figure that out.  The modding tutorials links are broke and i-mod website is offline again so having hard time finding helpful info right away.

And I don't recall giving permission or even being contacted by you regarding the Star Wars Logos I created a while back.

And you didn't even give me credit for them!

Learn a bit about ethics, dude.  Hope it feels good taking credit for other people's work.

Ok, now that I have access to I-Mod and now know the final answer on this mod/collection, am I in trouble for downloading it and should I delete it?
