Ubi to publish Prince of Persia on PC 100% DRM free!

It is a brave new world to be sure...

Aloha!

I figured you guys should know about this given that Ubi will be the first major publisher to take such a "risk". The official comment is here. I would like to see this information get some serious news coverage and word-of-mouth support so gamers can vote with their wallets on the topic and put one more nail in the coffin of DRM.

:banhammer:

Note: I have zero interest in this title but will get a copy to support the move.

The game wasn't even on my radar until I read about it being DRM-free on another forum. So I'm also going to purchase it on principle (although it looks like a game I may actually like as well). Interestingly, this is exactly the way I ended up buying Sins.

Anyway, I'll be spreading the word wherever I can too.

Sweet! I hope the sales rock that way there will be more proof beyond Sins that DRM hurts games. I noticed several people/sites jumped on the WoG being just as pirated as other titles with DRM. I think that had a lot to do with the fact it is a puzzle game and from an unknown studio to boot. So people were "testing things out" so to speak. This situation if it works out well will prove my point. After all Ubi is a major player in the industry and PoP is a major title with some history.

Yeah, I might have to buy a copy to support it as well.   I have a bit of interest in Prince of Persia, so I hope it is a good installment of the series.

Yeah, that's a good point. Interestingly, while 2DBoy said it was disheartening to see the high piracy numbers for WoG, they also said it wasn't any worse than they'd have expected if the game carried a DRM scheme, so they weren'y really that disappointed overall. (And they also pointed out their 'research' was very unscientific as well).

Maybe some people should repeatedly ask the guys at Ubi to put their games up on Impulse.  And to use Stardock's simple "register-serial-and-download-the-game" method and nothing else.  Wouldn't that be something?

I'll believe it when it is out.

And even then there is a chance I won't.

All I know is I played the Playstation version and it was pretty solid.  So whatevs.

@CrazyC0330 - yes it would. Hell I assumed you guys already so such a thing. I'll comment to Razz next time I'm over in Ubi country.

:jafo:

@Heavenfall - some people are all ready reporting they have it and no DRM.

If they put no DRM at all, it's even better. The "simple" mathod used by Stardock still requires internet access to activate the game, which some don't have, and Impulse is still unstable.

DRM or no DRM, piracy levels will be the same. The point is that as a game studio, they won't be spending obscene amounts of time, effort and money on something which gets removed within a couple of days, and even more importantly, will not annoy their legitimate customers and hamper their enjoyment of the product.

I remember the first Prince of Persia well, played it from a 5.25" diskette back in the day of EGA graphics.

Might just pick this one up to see how it compares. ;)

yeah it still is a way of DRM, but i absolutely like it how it works. the publishers got something like a safety for their lizences and so on, and the players wont get annoyed by some system-slow-down features of SecuRom and those bastardsoftwares....

head on impulse! ^^

Where is a sales guy when you need one?  :D

Ok Dtoid has published a story on it and I expect to see many other media outlets doing the same soon given I sent out media releases to over two dozen of them on the topic - I hope others find it news worthy. You can read the story here.

@IslandDog -  working on it... :borg:

The easiest would be to just log on IRC and prod Yarlen/Zoomba :)

After being very put off by Assassin's Creed I'm wary of buying Prince of Persia as it looks like they took the same overly symplistic combat system, one of my biggest frustrations with AC.

But nice to see they are going DRM free on this one. Hopefully it sales well so that the publishers get rewarded for such a move.

You do know I hate IRC -right? I'm a VoIP guy. :jafo:

Well ARS followed up on my email with a story is here. The spin on it is most jaded and delicious methinks. The comments at going on four pages in a few token hours are really something to say the least... I thought I was reading the SD thread on DRM for a few seconds.

Some other gamer news are also developing storys as well - Gee Ubi should hire me as a grassroots PR consultant.

But they aren't :P IRC is the way to reach them quickly :)

@Annatar - No doubt.  |-)

Shack also ran a story on PoP as well. You can read it here. I must say the user responses everywhere have been amazing. I was not aware that PoP was such an interesting title. Yet I find nothing interesting about it. I guess being a strategy game grognard has a price after all...

no DRM on an upcoming title from a big name publisher?  even tho i don't have too much interest in PoP, i will seriously consider buying it to prove to Ubisoft that non-DRM games will generate a better response from the community and will sell better (i'm using Sins as an example here).

Things are going well with my PR campagin for PoP. It has been referenced on a couple sites like digg today and now Kotaku has an article here.

I have also contacted a few media outlets and informed of the situation as well. I hope all goes well with those requests.

Additionally Ubi things over two million sales is good and three million in the long tail is achievable. You can read the official comment here.

UbiRazz explained. "………as PoP PC has no DRM we`ll see how truthful people actually are. Not very, I imagine."

Well aren’t  “We” a bit cynical

Yep. It is as I said both sides are very cynical.

Anyway, GP just published an article on it. You can read it here.

Bit-tech published an article here and there is a pimp on TechSpot here.
