Object Desktop 2009 Official Support Thread

Post your thoughts, questions, issues with Object Desktop 2009 here.

When Object Desktop 2009 is released, this is where the known issues will be posted.  Please post your findings here as well.  Thank you!

Notes and Known Issues: (all issues are being worked on at this time)

Theme Manager 3.0 (Published at 11am)

  • Aero Midnight theme included as a .suite file for Object Desktop customers.
  • My Desktop / Save My Desktop: Dreams, skins and cursors sometimes do apply when saved as part of a suite.  Please apply through the Applications tab as a workaround at this time.
  • Applications / Cursors: Sometimes cursors take two applies before applying.
  • My Desktop / Create New Theme: The Download URL function is not working at this time.
  • Please update SoundPackager before applying sounds through Theme Manager 3.0.
  • Users will need to open SoundPackager one time to have sound packages show up in Theme Manager 3.0.
  • Fixed - On systems that do not have MyColors installed, an error about the StardockWeather.ocx file not being registered will display when applying weather gadgets.
  • The Aero Midnight skin does not extract and apply 100% of the time on faster hardware.

Deskscapes 2.5 (with XP support published at 1pm)

  • With a Dream file applied dragging and dropping icons from the desktop to a folder does not work at this time.
  • Please visit this web site to review video card requirement details.  In short, AGP Video cards are not supported at this time.  Future driver updates from NVIDIA/ATI will add support later this year.  At that time only AGP 8x will be supported (4x/2x/1x bus speeds are not adequate to support dream functionality at low CPU).
  • The Watercolor Dream may exhibit some distortion on Windows XP.

Bootskin Pro 1.0 (published at 6:30pm)

  • There is a new WinCustomize gallery for Windows Vista bootskins.  Boot skins created for XP will not work with Bootskin Pro.
  • Bootskin Pro allows users to create boot skins for Windows Vista, so boot skins created for XP can be re-generated and uploaded to WinCustomize.
  • Bootskin Pro Create boot skin tab will attempt to read your Object Desktop Ultimate serial from the registry.  If the serial number field is blank, paste in your Object Desktop Ultimate serial number to create a boot skin.
  • There may be an issue with .bootskin file associations on some systems.

WindowBlinds 6.3 (published on 11/18/2008)

  • Windows Vista 64-bit users may need to reboot after install if skins do not apply correctly.

What fix are you waiting for and in which app?

Desktop Collage dream, which has been sort of updated now, but fails in most areas, including stopping working after 10mins :(

Before you read this, be aware that I'm NOT a representative from Stardock in any way.

Desktop Collage is not part of Object Desktop. To be honest, I think you're doing nothing but non constructive whining. While I understand that problems can be annoying, and sometimes it helps to ventilate that somewhere, it serves no REAL purpose. They've released a lot of new versions lately, some of them are going to have issues. Give them a break and just report the issues objectively. New releases tend to have problems.

(As far as I've tried Desktop Collage it works as advertised, but there may be bugs I haven't run into yet.)

Give them at least a few days to resolve initial problems with new versions. if it takes too long, THEN start "telling mommy" about it if you feel you need to.

I believe the wrong dream may have been updated and I have sent mails to the correct people to get this investigated.

I can't promise when it will be sorted as it is one of the dreams I didn't code (I did Photo dream, Ovals, Winter Snow and Expanding Shapes) but hopefully it is just a case of someone uploading the correct files.

It was mentioned earlier in another comment that you were getting direct support for ATI AGP cards in XP.  Are you doing the same with nVidida AGP in XP?

There is no need as the nvidia AGP cards do not experience the same problem.  As it happens their cpu usage is a little higher,  but on the other hand I believe they will work on AGP 4x cards too.  So what you lose on one hand you gain with the other.

The message about AGP cards is apparently not specific to the graphics card brand which is why it also shows up on nvidia boards.  Once the ATI drivers are out the message will either be removed or modified to only show on the older ATI drivers.

I'm a little confused with the AGP card problem now.

I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 AGP dual vga card with 256mb of memory.  I tried downloading DeskScapes 2.5 and it ran slow and the CPU ran high.  It even messed up things where I had to go into safe mode and reload the video drivers.

I run XP Home SP3 32 bit on a P4 2.6GHz system with 2.0GB of memory.  Did I just do something incorrect, need the new drivers or codecs?:S

I submitted a support ticket with Stardock support but I have yet to hear back. In the meantime, has anyone else seen what I have been experiencing with Deskscapes 2.5? Attempting to start *any* dream results in the Display Properties box hanging for a second, and then it goes back to normal with no dream applied. I'm running XP SP3 with a nVidia Quadro FX 570M.
Yes but a second push of the apply button usually does the trick. 512mb Nvidia Quadro FX4500, XP SP3
To clarify, repushing the apply button does not help in my case. I am still waiting to hear back from Stardock tech support, as none of the work I've done to resolve the issue on my own has done the trick. I appear to be ticket "ABP-625215"; Zargon, I don't suppose you might be able to have SD tech support take a look?

I have XP with DeskScapes 2.5 and when I double-click on a .dream file it doesn't start unless I already have another dream running.  It doesn't work if I have a wallpaper applied.  Same goes for right-clicking and selecting "Set as Desktop Background".  Not a huge issue, in comparison to others, just though I would report it.

Re Bootskin Pro

When you click on create bootskin a progress bar appears saying uploading image then downloading skin. Where does the upload go to and why? I just wanted to make bootskins for my personal use using images that I have downloaded from various sites. I do not want to infringe on anyone's rights.

I have confirmed the IP conflict with DeskScapes on another XPP machine - Dell Vostro 200 Desktop with 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO using 6.14.0010.6618 drivers.

Installing DeskScapes disables IP's shell icon repair functionality; uninstalling DeskScapes restores it.

Also couldn't get DeskScapes to work on that rig - got an activation error text message.  Appeared to be properly registered in Impulse & the DeskScapes Tab appeard in DP but picking one & clicking apply only made the screen flicker once.

Re Bootskin Pro

I just installed Bootskin Pro on my Vista Ultimate x86 SP1 (OEM) rig, and I get the same error message as on my Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 rig. Both rigs are similar - AMD, Gigabyte, Nvidia - so I am wondering if it may be a hardware/driver issue?

The new version of theme manager will not apply skin or widgets on suites or my colour themes on my computer operating Windows Vista. It works correctly on my computer operating Windows XP. I also have a problem with bootskin pro for vista. It will not apply a bootscreen, I recieve the error of there was an error applying _____ eg: aquamaine. Has any experienced the same problem or have any ideas?

yes, unless you are a yank you cannot use bootskin pro :(

Hi Zargon and all. I just wanted to followup with my earlier problem and let you know that it has been resolved. There was a new push of Impulse that solved my issue. THank you for your attention here. Jason

What codecs do I need? Where do I get them? The Dynamic dreams work fine, the others tell me I need a codec. HELP!!!!

How do I tell if my graphics card is AGP 4x or 8x?

It should tell you in the mobo owners manual under graphic display whether you have 4x or 8x... failing that, go to Administrative tools> Computer Management> Device manager> scroll down the list to Display Adapters> expand entry and right click on card entry> Properties... in the window under the 'General' tab at 'Location' it should tell you whether your card is PCIe or AGP @ 4x or 8x.

I hope this helps. :)

FX5200 is AGP 8X.   GeForce FX 5200 - Tech Specs

Then why does my Device Manager say PCI?

You can try and install Nvidia's Monitoring tool
Did that, it locked up my pC

I have an AGP card, and my device manager says the same thing.  Try this:

Go to Start menu and select run.  type "dxdiag" in the run box and hit enter.
When the DirectX Diagnostic tool opens go to the display tab and see if you have AGP Texture Acceleration enabled.  If you do then you must have an AGP card.  The chip type should also be displayed in that tab, my system has AGP listed there.
