Fleets Going WAY Outside Grav Well

from time to time this happens to me in a game, even with the latest patch.  For some reason, my fleet leaves a gravity well where it has been for some time and goes WAY off the map.  What's up??

Also, if I pay for pirates to attack my foe, sure'd be nice if my allies dodn't kill the pirates enroute!

Hm, haven't seen that myself... Maybe your ships are just way over or below the gravitiy well's plane. That sometimes looks (esp. for fighters and bombers) as if they were outside the gravity well.

I have seens this as well in the beta sometimes. When I am attacking the homeworld of an enemy and he starts to retreat he will just go vertically up or down in the grav well right off the map. It is rather annoying and the reason why I switched back to 1.05. I don't have any saved games but I do remember that it against medium opponents and it was the support cruisers that did this. I.E. the repair ships and carriers. The others stayed on the normal plane and fought.

I observed that, too, and I'm still playing 1.05. From time to time one or two ships of a fleet want to return to where the fleet came from after a phase jump, but they don't phase jump back but seem to want to go the whole way at cruise speed until I stop them.

Does it happend in the beta patch? I believe this was supposed to be patched up for it.

I found one of my kols cruising halfway between planets once, never seen it since though. And that was in version 1.5 or before.

I saw my opponent get chased out by my strike craft; the inhibitor made him impatient, I guess, so he just flew right on out.

I haven't seen this since 1.05, has anyone seen it in the latest 1.1 beta?

Nope, most of these posts seem to be 1.05 as well.

I have seen it in the 1.1 beta, the last game I played my fleet tried to chase some enemies halfway out of the gravity well. It was pretty weird. I've seen it happen multiple times.

I am runnning on the latest patch available through impulse.  My theory is that on saving, the game doesn't report the correct location of the fleet and when you open a saved game it puts the fleet outside of the grav well.  In my case, I didn't just lose track of my fleet . . or they didn't just drift.  It was my ONLY fleet.  Fighters stayed in the well, however.  I have the saved game, but I suspect it won't reveal much, because I feel the problem is with the act of "saving" itself.  When I rotated the camera they left the grav well on the z-axis (x, y, z).  It is also tricky to locate the fleet when this happens.  I had to find the designated cap ship on the screen to the far left and click it and make it return to the well.  But "finding" the fleet can be tricky, involving a series of zoom ins and outs till you find it.  In my case, they returned to the well extremely slowly.  I chose to keep playing rather than reload a previous since I was winning.

Do you have a save of this?

If it's common for you, please save the game when you see it and send it to [email protected] with a description so Blair can go break something in the office.

Ships going outside the grav well on normal engines has been a freak-bug with roots in the beta.. they always fix the causes if they have a save game to debug, but it seems to come back once in a while.

Actually its just my opinion, because this has happened to me too, i have 1.05, but it is COOL! I like it. It is different than just sitting horizontal all the time.  :)  Or in the well all the time.  Just my opinion though.

If its possible, can we keep it? Or at least make it a choice? Haha, i may have to keep an old unpatched copy around just to keep it.  :)

Teal, it sucks, because if you are attacked, your fleet is in no-where land and you have to wait 10 real minutes just to get them to the grav well.

Here is the link to a save right when I think it was beginning happening (I couldn't find the exact instance, the ships are far away from the star and are getting father but I couldn't get them to go all the way out again).

My version is 1.096

If you notice around the blue star, my fleet is pretty far from the gravity well. Now, when I played the whole game through, the ships were even further out (nearly half of the distance to the next planet!). I couldn't repeat it, but maybe this will give you a start?

Here is the save: http://www.mediafire.com/?mwddtxqlnhx

And the stats: http://www.mediafire.com/?oyl1cpcuizd

I'm looking for a more comprehensive replay of it, still watching! If I find a more obvious version of the error I'll send that via email to stardock...

I have the most updated patch 1.096beta. I have played many matches online and offline and never seen it happen.

When I had 1.05 patch it happened to the ai mostly, but it did happen a lot to me. It was extremely annoying because it did literaly take 10 min to get back down to the planet like knownalien said.

Yes, you are exactly right!  But i'm sorry if i like it and you dont. I play casually, with not alot of time, usually only an hour or so a day. So my games are stretched out over days. I save when my hour is up and go on about the rest of my life with what i have to do. Next day i come back. I don't mind that it takes 10 minutes to get them back in the well, i think it is cool. It happens also when i create fighters/bombers and they are strung out half way across the system and coming in to join their host. In a game tonight they were several planets out, and passing those planets to get to the well where my carrier was waiting.  I went on with other things, and other ships, and when the fighters/bombers got into the well and joined the carrier, then i moved it. It is fine for me, but i can understand if someone thinks its a bug. So the devs probably will patch it, not to worry that my little opinion will threaten you with them keeping it in. But still i will keep an old copy around. Just for fun, and because i rather like it. That's all.

Just being polite, even though i disagree,

Sincerely,

-Teal

Teal, I think maybe we are talking about two different things because what you describe isn't quite what I am describing.  I think I'll email a copy of the game as suggested.  I have done this once before but never heard back from Ironclad.  I am a loyal customer and probably Ironclad games are all I will buy and play for years to come.  I have all Galactic Civ games and expansions and will purchase Entrenchment and all others.  These games have everything I have ever wanted in a game.  :)

They don't often reply to mails unless they need a followup, but rest assured they look at them :P This bug in particular I know Blair hates with a passion, so if you've got a save game that shows it in progress, they'll squash it. They just need the save. Replay won't do much in this case.

My apologies then, i didnt mean to get you upset, but yes, you are entitled to play the game the way you like. I too enjoy the game immensely. But im probably not a hard core gamer, i only play casually and for a limited time a day. Certainly you and the other gamers who play more often, and of course can afford these games more often should have a legimate choice. Im sorry i offended and i hope they get this for you. It would make it more fun for you to play if it weren't aggrevating, that i understand. Take care and sorry to offend KnowAlien.

Teal, my apologies.  You dod NOT offend.  Everything is golden.  :)

As far as bugs go, this one is not a game stopper.
