It isnt a United States Ship, so why does all my ships have the USS prefix?

Seriously, I think letting the user choose the prefix would add a bit more flavour to the game. Pretty please?

It isn’t? With the rate US conquers the world today, by the year 2178, it will be the only country …

(Just a joke, do not take seriously :) )

I think it means "United (or Unity) Star Ship", meaning a ship belonging to a greater unity. You will see that USS prefix is used in a lot of sci-fi. I heard it explained that way once.

United STAR SHIP is what it stood for. Whatever that meant.

Yeah, and the terrorist minor races could use AQS: Al-Qaeda Ship. ;D

It's United Star Ship... But since there's also the United Planets, it doesn't really fit in with the theme of the game anyway?

I'd love to see an option to customise this too. :)

You can rename your ships, allowing you to remove or change the USS part. I think if you look at the screen shots of one of Brad's gameplay examples (#4, I think), the Yor also renamed its ships to threats on his empire. LOL

Bah, like Europe will ever have a starfleet. :P

'Union Star Ship' makes sense in the scheme of the game, though. Technically 'Alliance Star Ship' would make the most sense, but it would have a very unfortunate acronym.

I know you can rename your ship, but honestly, who wants to rename every last ship they produce when a simple change to the system would allow us to create our own prefix code? :)

The simplest way is to have the prefix be in line with the name of the race. Since people will name their government different things in the setup screen there is no reason to give the ships a certain prefix other than what goes with that race. The reason is that no matter what you call your government, your will still be Human, or Yor, etc.

Humans: HSS--Humans Star Ship
Yor: YSS--Yor Star Ship
etc, etc. You get the idea.

This should be the default as it makes the most sense. You can still customize though.

When we create new civilization, maybe we should be able to write a prefix for our ships.

Prefix customisation is a great idea. im sure this wouldnt be a hard change either as i cant see this being hard coded

Building off Ancient Warrior's suggestion, how about the initials of the empire's name followed by SS? I know it's possible to do because I've done stuff like this in my Computer Science classes.

Well, back in old Star Trek days (when you were all whippersnappers...er, and me too) they stated once that it was "United Space Ship" the idea that the Federation was "United Space."

Actually, I get a bit bugged by the fact that -all- the races have USS ships. Takes away from the flavor a little, IMO. :)

All ships from anomolies get that prefix. Apparently the Precursors were big on the whole United Space concept too. :D

Hehe, well, if the Federation used "UPS" as a prefix, everyone would think they were in the parcel delivery business...
