Patch or Server?

Which is f@#%ing up this time?

Alright I have been paitent given them time to fix there system and iron out any last minute glitches but this is just rediculse!!

I ahve been trying on and off for a while now trying to install the infamous beta patch for sins v1.1. and unsuprisingly it was stuffed and was not installing. So i got on the forums looked up how we have to fix it and I've done it. This included reinstalling, selecting all the preferences and such.

Hurray it worked ... for about two seconds till it told me that there was a 417 error and server expectation had failed. Now is this a just a problem (or should I say another) with the update or the impulse server. If so will there be a chance that it will be fixed or should I go and play a not as good game which will work?

Please help I love this game and i didn't pay for a broken copy

p.s. this is a descriptiopn of what a 417 error is http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E417.html feel free to look it up stardock

Just to be sure, you have tried the alternate downloading mechanism? Have you tried switching servers?

How long have you been getting this error? At the moment, my best guess would be to try again in a little while.

If SD Support gives you an answer that involves something on your end, could you post it here? I've not seen this before.

I think its more of a server problem but If theres something to fix I'll put it up so others don't have just as much trouble.

I'm still testing every now and again to see if it's going to fix its self.

Hi Martydoug,
I'm in my 40's and have been playing these games for a fair while... over the years I've noticed the better the game... the more patches you need to apply.
Its a shame such games need to be released at set goal dates, forcing the strained game designers to send out the first batches as "working"...
We all know what we get.

In the meantime, I have a suggestion for you (not sure if you are using XP or Vista as an operating system but regardless).
1. Uninstall your current Sin's setup (best to restart the PC to clear the registry).
2. Restart and install the vanilla version of the game from your CD (I assume its a CD and not streamed).
3. Restart to settle the registry (don't believe Microsoft, the reg files don't always fully update without a restart).
4. Download the patch prior to the beta. This would be patch 1.05.
4.1. I find the easiest way to do this is via Google with the following search string:
+"Sins of a Solar Empire" +version 1.05
4.2 I hate having to register (beyond the game) just to download a patch, so if you are the same you will need to wade through a few URL's to find a download site that doesn't want you to register or (even worse) pay for the patch...
5. Install the version 1.05 patch.
Now you have to simply enjoy the game as version 1.05 and wait until September sometime to download the NON beta version 1.1

Don’t touch beta’s unless you want to:-
1. Not play single player (the A.I is generally the last module added to the game, and sadly it’s the least developed of all software modules).
2. Expect a lot of glitches… Beta’s are beta for this reason.

As an aside, I am always amazed of the non continuity of good ideas from one 4x game to the next... Stars!, Space Empire’s, Galactic Empire’s, Birth of the federation, even Civ type games etc etc.
Each one of these games has several good ideas... do we have to attempt to reinvent the wheel each time a new game comes out ?
