New Zealand!

I may move there.

So I've been trapped in miserable, hot, frustratingly confusing over why people feel patriotic about it Texas for the past 10 years and I finally have the chance to escape.

As a teacher I have the good grace to move more or less anywhere so long as I can teach in a language I know and there is a school present.

I've been thinking of going to New Zealand.  I'm a big mountain person and think the climate and geography would be perfect.

Anyone been to/lived in New Zealand?  Any advice or information you can give me?

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I'm sure new Zealand is beautiful. Nor do I have any particular love of Texas. However people usually find that when they try to run away from their problems they can't because their problems are with themselves and not the location in which they happen to live.

I live in Australia, but I visited New Zealand on a tour a couple of years ago.
The place is wonderful. There are quiet (and fantastically beautiful) countrysides as well as busy (and fantastically beautiful as well) cities. I wouldn't mind going there again one day myself.
I'd recommend it to you, but then I haven't lived there, so I'm not very aware of the politics (they sure love their rugby, though).
I hope you find the right solution to your quandary :)

If by "problems" you mean, "born and raised in California where I was spoiled by good weather, varied and interesting landscape, and the ability to spend a summer outdoors instead of trapped inside" Then no, I don't really see how they could follow me around.

I don't have any problems, I just don't like Texas and i've finally finished my graduate study, hence "escape". :)

Perhaps I was a little harsh.

However you're lucky you weren't inundated by flames from the many people that love Texas and are proud of it. It's never a good choice to denigrate a place for whatever the reason. If you had merely left off your first sentance then I never would have responded sarcastically in the first place.

See how much nicer the following sounds versus starting out by bad mouthing the great state of Texas.

Like I said I have no particular love for Texas (nor particular hate for it either) but you gave everyone that does have some attachment to the state reason to take offense and by doing so benefited your question not in the slightest.

Someone wiser than me once said that internet discussions would go much more smoothly if everyone just omitted the first and last sentence (or paragraph) from what they were going to write. It's remarkable how often that holds. :)

As for New Zealand, I spent 3 weeks there in 2005 and absolutely loved it. It's a bunch of the most dramatic natural scenery you could imagine, all crammed into a couple small islands. I loved it so much I'm probably going back for another visit in September.

The only warnings I might give someone who's considering actually living there are:

1) It's a loooong way from anywhere except Australia. If you'd like to travel on occasion to North America or Europe, it's going to cost you in both time and money. That flight is neither short nor cheap. You're paying $1500-$2000 to be locked in a tin can for 14 hours straight, and that just gets you as far as LA. :)

2) Because of the distance, manufactured goods tend to be expensive. Food is cheap (and good!), but that new flatscreen TV will probably cost you a lot more than it would in Texas.
