Ability to NAME fleets

would love this feature in a patch

I just had a relaxing game vs the AI and was thinking.

Would it not be nice to have the ability to name the fleets we create. I for one would easily recognise my two or three fleets by name. Just like I find it easier to identify with my capital ships by looking at the name. For me this seems to help me remember exactly what has happened and what state a fleet is in.

An ally also can easily identify with you saying your sending the 7th fleet in rather than "a fleet" with "x XXXX  XXXX " ships.

Would be nice and interesting. But probably not high up on the list of things to add unfortunately.

yeah, i just thought it would be fun. I always rename my planets and ships. Either for a bit of fun for my fellows playing or for a serious naming convention

This is the first thing I noticed when I got the basic understanding of the game. "Why the HELL can't I name my fleets?!?" I can name useless things like planets but not important things like fleets. ><

i like this idea alot
its better then renaming planets which can b funny but has no point

Do we have a name for the feeling of wanting a dev of your favourite game to incoprate a great idea that makes lots of sense (like naming fleets)?

The best way I can describe it (from my Planetside days mostly) is: "Arrgghh ughhh... noo.. AAgghhh uugjjjhsjglnsgjng;naorngar!"

On that point of being able to remember names of capships easily, and how it compares to being able to name fleets, might it not be a good idea to have automatic naming of a fleet after its leading capital ship? This would be advantageous in terms of recognizability in both name and function (considering that the capital so named would be labelled in type as well). Granted, this impairs naming of non-capital-including fleets, but perhaps could also be adapted: e.g. "1st Cobalt Fleet".
This is merely a suggestion, however, and may turn out less practical than simple manual identification.

Remember Rise of Nations? That game had nice way of automaticly naming forces (1st Army, 2nd Cavalry, 3rd Navy...). I doubt there would be a reasonable way to use that in sins however.

But yes, i would like to name fleets.

I would like to name each individual ship! You were able to do that in Civ4, why not Sins?

Sins is not Civ4! It's a lot easier to add features within the framework of a turn-based game than it is in a real-time strategy game. Why do you think Sins is the first (and only) respectable RT4X game? (Empire Earth tried, and I've yet to play III, but from what I saw in I, II, and the expansions, it never really created a true 4X feel as Sins does)

But yeah, I liked being able to rename fleets in GalCiv2. I would always name them after the system they were based in, like "Battlefleet Terra" and so on, to keep track of them better.

Im guessing the reason you can't name indavidual frigates is because they are ment to be fodder, while the caps are ment to be special.

fleet naming would be nice.
