Games for PC!

NOT Games for Windows!

People are saying that PC as a platform for games is dying. System requirements are jumping through the roof, and so on and so forth. What we need in this "broken" world is :Games for PC, or what i whould have wanted PC Gaming Alliance to be from the start. I do not know how PC Gaming Alliance works or what their goal/mission is. My guess is that it is bringing PC gaming to WINDOWS! Board members (secretary in fact) that are responsible for "Global Marketing, Games for Windows". I have abandoned Windows, I do not have a valid licence (even if I had i whould not use it cause all the DRM infection, "Piracy is the better choice" as usuall), probably never will. I have made the switch to the dark side of the penguins! YES that is right... Linux now runs my gaming rig. Linux is better in allmost all aspekts than windows, except for the most painfull part: Gaming. One could run Cedega, or any other "emulator", Virtual Machines to get Windows games up and running. I whould once and for all see gamers abandoning this hell that is Microsoft Windows and give me games that i can run on my machine of choice, OS of choice. "Windows" gaming alliance is not the way to go. Do it again, do it correct!

Whatever floats your boat. Personally I could care less that a game runs by pigeon post. I'll leave it to the developer to decide what they want. If they produce a game which means switching platforms - that has not happened yet - I'll switch, no bother.

The circular Windows V Linux argument is as about as productive as Windows V Mac - even the latter died down greatly after Apple ditched motorola and went Intel. Its not a question of using "the best" or its "leading edge" or "different". Its whether an individual likes the game ..... or it should be.

Which gets back to "whatever floats your boat". ;)

Well OpenGL runs on MAC, Windows, Linux, Solaris, MOBILE PHONES!
You name it and it can run OpenGL. It is not about the OS it is about "shutting" you out if you don't use Windows. Games should be free of those boundaries.

There's more to the life of a developer than access to OpenGL. Its all about access at API level and the functions it provides, together with a host of practical development tools, compilers yaddi yadda, needed to write and package the whole thing. The latter are not going to get written for other platforms in the same quantity and quality as for the Windows platform, unless there is a known and proven business case for doing it.

So why should a developer struggle through another platform if the tools are not there; and even if they are, why do it if the user base for that platform is relatively small? With the growth of Linux use, no doubt in the end the needed tools to make life easier will be written. Not at this moment in time though, I am not surprised they dont exist in quantity, Companies are not charities, grand theory is one thing, reality is another, they have to make a profit, else kiss goodbye to any games at all.

Only a lunatic releases a book written in Mandarin expecting it to be a worldwide best seller.

If they write it in OpenGL from the beginning it whould be easier to port it for every major console to (PS3 anyone?)... Open GL is not the answer it is just a solution that works on pretty much anything.

I am not saying that gaming on windows is a bad thing. Gaming is great, I love it! I just want people, Especialy the PCGA to make PC gaming the wonderfull gaming-platform that it has the potential to be! And not just restricting it to Microsoft APIs that are locked into their OS. Bring PC gaming to eceryone everywhere.

EDIT: Of course I understand that there needs to be a economical reason for the developers to bring their Games/Programs onto other OS. I whould not go to work if i didn't get paid.

I agree completely. I used to be a Mac freak. Then I switched to Windows, because it had access to more games (and the older ones are cheaper). Either OS seems to work fine as long as I keep it maintained. When I am playing a game, I don't even think about the platform I am using. It is simply a means to an end.
