Im not much into the FPS genre anymore, but when i did play there were some good times.

1st on my list is Soldier of Fortune 2. A "realistic" FPS that turned into a campy hilarious gorefest. I spent many hours on this one.

2nd the Quake series 1-4. Q4 kinda sucked, but it had its moments. I enjoyed the hell out of Quake 3 Arena, and its mods like Urban terror, and True Combat.

Unreal Tournament 99, and 2004: Another fun game because its campy. I havn't played 07 since i lost interest in FPS.

Return To Castle Wolfenstien: "Ze enemy ist VEEKEND!" Classic.. nuff said :)

Doom 3: What i thought was going to be just "Doom with enhanced graphics" turned out to be something totally different, and quite enjoyable. How many times did you get scared when a monster popped out of nowhere?

Of course lets not forget Classic Doom :D

The level design in Painkiller is amazing.Hell yes it is. Shooting up churches, army bases, and orphanages in Purgatory, filled with the minions of Satan. The more I play that game, the more I absolutely love it. It's ridiculously fun.

The last level of the original is time-frozen in the moment a nuclear explosion goes off. How fucking beautiful and unique was that?!

Probably Halo 3, Crysis, and Battlefield 2142 for me. Battlefield: Bad Company is looking mighty kickass too - I really enjoyed the SP demo - wasn't a big fan of MP really - it was alright.

However, Halo 3's MP can get dull if played too much (and I don't have XBL). Crysis is a work of God's art, however, I'd like a computer that could handle it on the highest settings with a reasonable framerate. Battlefield 2142 is nice, but it didn't live long in the FPS fan base, and is getting kind of old.

I'm impressed much by Battlefield: Bad Company's destruction and great graphics.

I haven't played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's SP yet (only the demo), and I'm not sure I'd really enjoy it. Its MP (split-screen Xbox 360) gets boring to me (haven't played the PC online MP, however).

PLANETSIDE. The only MMOFPS ever created (maybe Huxley will also be this). When it first came out, I had a tear in my eye due to the utter epicness of the battles. Hundreds of soldiers in the air, on the ground, in vehicles, and assaulting via airdrop against defenders of bases scattered on multiple continents. I say "when it first came out", because although it still exists, its just a shadow of its former self.

Timesplitters 2 is the best FPS i've ever played on its multiplayer & challenge modes alone. I played as the Gingerbread man or Calamari.

Goldne oldies like Doom or Golden Eye were great fun. But Timesplitters wins for FPS, hands down. I still play it occassionally when i'm feeling nostalgic.

Battlefield 1942(Desert Combat Mod)[The only reason I bought 1942!]

Battlefield 2 (Back in the day when the Blackhawk+good squad was more feared than a bomber...[before the minigun nerf], and AA was weak as hell)

Command and Conquer Renegade (I still play this from time to time.... love CnC)

Counter-Strike
UT99
HalfLife1+Opposing Force
Halflife2
HL1/2 mods....there is too many....
Quake2+3
COD4
R6:RVS
SOF
DooM 2 (Yay Lan!) [Played 1 only on SNES....was still fun...)
RTCW

------------------------Console Love----------------------------
Goldeneye(N64)-Epic
Dino Crisis 2 for the PS1. I ****** love that game.(Third Person Shooter tho).

----ooohhs and ahhhhs------
(When they came out....amazing)
Farcry (Came from nowhere)
F.E.A.R. (If you had the power to run it with all the soft shadows... it was amazing)
Crysis (nuff said.)

I cant believe all the people that say Halo.... that makes me sad (sorry but Halo compared to a good PC FPS is trash[yes i know halo1\2 eventually got ported in all their crappy glory.) Hate me for it... idk.

Theres more, but I'm feeling sick and my memory sucks.

Your assignment, people: GO GET PAINKILLER.

Descent 3

Was hoping someone would remember that game. Nice, and 100% agreed. :CONGRAT:

I liked the whole Descent series. Its part simulation because your in a fighter, but its done in a first-person perspective and plays as such so I think it fits this topic. Even today I still have this almost over a decade-old game running and play it every now and than. The game brought something original, exciting, challenging and even a nice side story with it. Something you don't see as often today.

System shock 2 for the best single player experience, hands down.

I preffered the original System Shock at the time, obviously SS2 improved on the technical aspects particularly the scenery and detail.

Best FPS of all time should go to Half Life I think because once you factor in the free mods Team Fortress Classic & Counter Strike there really isnt any FPS game that can trump all 3 as a package.

CoD4 & Crysis were good games but have little replay value to offer.

Come on guys go old school!! Hands down best FPS 007 Goldeneye for the N64

I remember Goldeneye! That was alot of fun :D

The Orange Box.... Excellent recent games imo :CONGRAT:
I used to play all the ID software games from Doom until Q4 and QuakeWars:ET when it went pretty poor and full of baggage programs - the gameplay moved from fun towards flashy graphics.
Battlefield 2 was a classic that I wasted many many hours on, until the rules changed and made it rather poor.
The old CounterStrike :) before CS:S took over and mainly weirdos seemed to play it.
But the best game of all though true rose-tinted specs for me is QuakeWorld... I played that for several years in several high ranked clans. I absolutely loved team deathmatch and Rocket Arena :)

I'm not a very avid FPS-gamer, but I really enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D and the first Unreal Tournament. More recently, I have also played through Bioshock, which was cool.

I'm partial to Tremulous and Jedi Academy. And Tribes is good. 1, 2, and Vengeance, but only for single-player on the latter.

Battlefield series for me
bf1942 - bf2 - bf2142
And some Unreal Tornament (the original and first)

I miss Planetside so badly. I went back and played a little during the most recent merge and had a blast (especially with the new Engineer goodies), but it's just not the same as it was. It used to be possible to actually fight effectively as an infil, but no more.

I'll never forget fighting for /hours/ over a single bridge, the air thick with 75mm shells (way back before Core Combat) as infantry and vehicles charged across, only to be turned back, with flanking attacks just barely falling short of breaking the bridgeheads... and that one time I killed about eight people in a row by running a Galaxy low over a ridge.

Ah, well. You know what they say about all good things. For now I'm playing Team Fortress 2 and a little DoD:Source shooter-wise (and that's really about all I have time for, beyond MechWarrior 4--at least I'm making good money :P).

I'll go with CoD4, C&C:Renegade (A unique and fun multiplayer), GoldenEye, Republic Commando (This just screamed for Co-op), and one of the Tribes games (I don't even remember which it was...).

Halo 3 is my favorite because how social the game is. Its always good to play with guys u know personally because you communicate better and almost always win.

I love halo for the pc just because how rediculous my sniping is in that game. I wish I could snipe like that in Halo 3 but thats why mouse and key board rule.
