AMD Game!

What do you think?

I've already posted this thing in another thread, but I think it deserves a separate topic. AMD wants to standardize gaming machines. I guess that's partly because of desperation, since Intel and nVidia are leading the market right now. But the idea itself is good. Kind of. There is no clear upgrade plan, the specs are somewhat weird, and I can't find a complete certified system anywhere to check the price.

Why do we need specs for gaming machines?
1. To defeat the stupid stereotype that an 'average' gamer spends $3,000 on hardware annually.
2. To make hardware vendors balance their gaming PCs. There is almost no point in using 4 gig of ram with 32 bit OS, or a super-expensive CPU with crappy video cards.
3. To make buying mid-range gaming systems easier.

What do you think about the idea of such specs in general, and AMD move specifically? It would be interesting to hear from StarDock people on this subject as well.

Seems like AMD is attempting to niche sell back into premium gaming systems like Dell XPS and Alienware amoung others. It will probably have limited success. For now I will chalk this one into the box with Intel VIIV and AMD Live! as disappointing.

I would estimate that the vast majority of "gamers" don't buy these systems and prefer to build their own. Cost is less of a motovater to many and the very rare extream gamers that do have $3000 systems are one of two types. 1) they bout a $1500 system for $3000 because it says Dell on the side and they now call themselves gamers or 2) the know exactly what they are doing and their system is a living being constantly changing with technology.

I only recently retired my old gaming box from 10 years ago. For the games it played, it played them well, but it was never start of the art.

My new computers I expect to last for 5 years or more. When they need enhancements, I will put them in. My total out of pocket to start was about $1100 for two identical computers.

So for me, an XPS or something based on this new AMD brand is pointless. It is intentionally designed to limit flexability. Thus, they sell more as people replace entire systems instead of specific components.
