New Win Conditions

They're desperately needed

I know that this has been said before, but I don't think that it's ever had it's own thread.

We really need new win conditions.

Sure, the "absolutely crush your opponent down to the last planet" thing works for small games, but when you have 7 to 9 opponents, it's just ridiculous.  The amount of time it takes just to mop up is obscene.  Thus, I thought it would be a good idea if we as a community banded together to come up with (realistic) win conditions that could be implemented in a patch (probably the best), expansion, or mod.

And time for my suggestion:

When you click on your name in the diplomacy window, you see your rank in three categories:  Military, Empire, and Economy.  As of right now, the ranks only serve as a benchmark to compare you to your opponents.

To get a win condition out of this, I suggest that there be a sort of victory timer for each person.  When someone is first in two or more categories, the timer counts down.  When he is only first in one category, the timer stops (but does not reset).  When he isn't first in any, the timer counts back up.  Being first in all three categories would result in a slight boost to the countdown rate.  When the timer reaches zero, the player wins the game.  Ideally, the countdown time could be changed in the game options.  Some tweaking might be required for early game.

Additionally, if multiple win conditions are implemented, it would be nice to select what combination of them to use (such as in Dawn of War).

For me personally well I can understand why some want these changes just as long as the traditional way kepts kept as an option, as a person who just enjoys the game I like to have an epic game anyway which entails much time. Im guessing the people who take this game seriously may agree with you on the timer thing, its not my kinda thing so all I would suggest is keep the normal options available. Im not sure if this is what your getting at but Im starting to think it would be for the best if there was like a clan mod , that way people that just wanted to play as normal wouldnt be forced to play otherwise and vica versa. (Just trying to think of the best for everyone here not knocking your idea :) )

I agree with what red said about keeping the original "absolute victory" as an option since it's a method I thoroughly enjoy.

As far as controlling the victory timers in the original proposal, perhaps the timers only start after x minutes of games play (preferably selectable from 20 minutes to 60min) This would help prevent quick easy victories at the start of the game.

Another few ideas for victory conditions:

-Colonize or spread your culture to X% of the map at one time. (With the % and which option or both being selectable obviously) Currently once you've got your opponent at 25% of her planets left, victory is all but assured. (This option would also promote more aggressive expansion opposed to slowly fortifying and creeping outwards.

-Eliminate the enemies Capital. Pretty straight forward, once their home world is gone so are they.

-Eliminate the enemies flagship. Similar to eliminating the enemies home world except the ship is mobile and much harder to take down. Although since tracking it down could prove to be nearly impossible so the ships location should be viewable to the enemy from 10 or so jumps away or maybe always. (Range selectable perhaps?)Also with is option enabled the flagship should start at level 10, which would make it more challenging to take down. (Running constantly with the ship could be a problem though, so a default cool down of 2-3 minutes for jump charge up when it's engaged in combat would perhaps be necessary? Although luring it into a ambush or just using jump inhibitors etc.. would solve this somewhat)

-Find the Ancient Artifacts. Kind of a galactic treasure hunt, whoever finds X # of hidden artifacts and hangs onto them for X amount of time wins. (the # of artifacts present and the # needed for victory, as well as the time they need to hang onto them being adjustable obviously)

Each one of these victory conditions would make for a different "feel" to the game and really add to the replay value tremendously. (Maybe adding in some more achievements centered around these victory conditions would be neat to for those of us who are keen on earning them legitimately.)

@Silveressa
Great ideas, I'd love to see all of them implemented.

As for categories and timer, well... I like them games long :)

Generally, different win conditions would be a nice addition and probably not too hard to introduce them to the game. Maybe some modders could tell us if it's doable at the moment...

These conditions sound great but one thing I would really like to see is when a culture overwhelms a planet the population remains and they become part of your empire.

King of the Hill-themed maps would be nice to see, too. Instead of just "hold X kind of planets for Y minutes", there'd be an uncolonizable designated as "the Hill". You hold the Hill by keeping a capital ship in there. The more capitals, the faster you gain points/time inside required to win.
Basically, think Halo, but on a 4X scale.

A tech allowance meter like they had in the older C&Cs (RA2 and before) would be a cool addition. More epic, psychotic, frigate-fragging frenzies.
Who else wants to see people build nothing but colony ships, siege frigates, and scout ships the entire game?

Boy howdy, these are all great ideas! I hope we get to see some of this in the future. I especially like the Kill the Capital to end the game.

I would suggest a "Kill The Space Elf" variant to the "Kill The Flagship" idea. Each race would have a single Space Elf represented by a marker. The Space Elf lives on a planet and has no weapons or defenses of its own. It can be transported only by a non-captal colony ship. The Space Elf dies when either the planet it is on is completely razed or if its transport is destroyed. The death of the Space Elf signals the end of its host civilization, as well as much spectacular cheering and revelry.

Another ancient thread, however these I feel are worth revisiting for possible inclusion in the new Sins expansion?

More then anything having an expansion that increases the number of ways to play the game would garner my interest the most. New ships, new factions, new research options are the nuts and bolts of game play, the real thrill and appeal would come from earning a victory in ways that were previously impossible and give the name a "fresh" feeling that having been around for this long; it could use to appeal to old time fans and draw the interest of new players.  B)

They've already confirmed new game modes of some sort will be included, and will probably invite some discussion on it when the beta gets closer.
